A New Era of Connectivity
Indian Railways is expanding its premier Vande Bharat Express service in Jammu and Kashmir, with a third train set to connect Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. This follows the successful launch of two existing Vande Bharat services in June 2025, which have been
operating at full capacity ever since. The new train will notably include a stop at Udhampur, a long-standing demand from the local population, further enhancing connectivity for the region. These semi-high-speed trains have drastically cut travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to under five hours, a journey that can take double the time by road, especially with unpredictable traffic and weather. For travellers, this means a faster, more predictable, and comfortable alternative to the often-congested Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
The Engineering Marvel Behind the Journey
The Vande Bharat's arrival in the valley is the culmination of one of India's most ambitious and challenging engineering feats: the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). Declared a national project in 2002, this 272-kilometer railway line navigates the treacherous Himalayan terrain with numerous tunnels and bridges. The crown jewel of this project is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, soaring 359 meters above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower. This all-weather link was crucial to making reliable train travel to Srinagar a reality, overcoming geographical barriers that have isolated the valley for decades. The train journey itself has become a tourist attraction, offering breathtaking views of the engineering marvels and the region's natural beauty.
A Game Changer for Tourism and Economy
The impact of the Vande Bharat extends far beyond passenger convenience. It is being hailed as a 'game changer' for the region's economy, which is heavily reliant on tourism. The improved connectivity is expected to drive a significant increase in tourist footfall, providing a much-needed boost to hoteliers, cab operators, and local artisans. Travel agents have noted that the reliable and affordable train service offers a competitive alternative to airlines, which often charge high fares during peak seasons. Furthermore, the all-weather rail line provides a stable channel for local producers of apples, dry fruits, and handicrafts to transport their goods to markets across the country, fostering economic growth and creating new opportunities for local businesses.
What Travellers Can Expect Onboard
The Vande Bharat Express is designed for comfort and safety, offering a premium travel experience. The trains are equipped with modern amenities, including AC chair cars, ergonomically designed rotating seats, large windows for observation, and on-board Wi-Fi and infotainment systems. To handle the high demand, the initial 8-coach rakes were augmented to 20 coaches, more than doubling the capacity. A critical feature for this route is the train's advanced winterisation, allowing it to operate in sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall, conditions that frequently bring road traffic to a standstill. This ensures that the Kashmir Valley remains accessible year-round, a significant advantage for both tourists planning their holidays and residents needing to travel for work or personal reasons.
More Than Just a Train
The symbolism of the Vande Bharat running through the Kashmir Valley cannot be overstated. It represents a significant step in integrating the region more closely with the rest of the country, not just physically but also economically and socially. The reliable connectivity helps break the sense of isolation, particularly during harsh winters when the highway closes. For many passengers, from students to pilgrims and government employees, the service has already become an indispensable lifeline, offering a safe, fast, and dignified mode of transport. As passengers watch the scenic landscape from the comfort of the modern train, the journey is more than just a trip; it's a powerful symbol of progress and a new chapter for Jammu and Kashmir.
