Understanding Festive Special Trains
During peak travel periods like Diwali, Chhath Puja, and Dussehra, Indian Railways introduces 'Festival Special' trains to manage the immense passenger rush. These are temporary services added to high-demand routes to supplement the regular, permanently
scheduled trains. Their primary purpose is to increase capacity and provide more travel options when standard trains are booked solid months in advance. These trains are identifiable by their numbers, which often start with a '0', signalling they are a special service operating on a temporary schedule with a slightly higher fare structure. Knowing how to find them is the key to securing a direct route home.
Method 1: The IRCTC Website
The official Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website is the primary portal for all train bookings. To find special services, use the 'Book Ticket' feature as you normally would, entering your source and destination stations and your desired date of travel. On the results page, look for trains specifically marked with a 'Special' tag or those with numbers beginning with '0'. The system doesn't always have a simple filter for 'special trains only', so you'll need to manually scan the list of available services. These trains are often announced by various railway zones, so checking the 'News & Updates' section on the IRCTC homepage can also provide information on newly announced services.
Method 2: The NTES App
The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) is the official Indian Railways app for real-time train information. While its main function is to track live train status, it is an excellent tool for discovery. Use the 'Trains Between Stations' feature to see all services on your route. Like the IRCTC website, it will list special trains alongside regular ones. The advantage of NTES is its direct link to the railway's operational backend, making it a highly reliable source for train schedules, routes, and timings. You can also check the 'Rescheduled', 'Diverted', and 'Cancelled Trains' sections, which is crucial during the festive season when schedules can change.
Method 3: Zonal Railway Announcements
Indian Railways is divided into different zones (e.g., Northern Railway, Central Railway), and each zone independently announces special trains originating from its stations. These announcements are often published as press releases on their respective websites and are picked up by news media. Following a few major news outlets or dedicated railway news portals can alert you to new trains as soon as they are announced. When you see an announcement, it will include the specific train numbers, their routes, and the dates of operation. You can then take this exact train number and search for it on IRCTC or NTES to book your ticket.
Essential Tips for a Successful Booking
Finding the train is only half the battle; booking it is the other. First, be prompt. The booking window for most trains, including specials, typically opens 60 days in advance, and seats fill up within minutes for popular festive dates. Second, be flexible. If you can travel a day or two before or after the main festival day, your chances of finding a confirmed seat increase dramatically. Third, always double-check the details. Before booking, confirm the journey date, train number, and especially the boarding and destination station names, as large cities have multiple terminals. Finally, remember that special trains have different rules; they often don't allow for concessions, and some ticket types like waitlisted tickets may not be available.
