First, Choose Your Corner
Every home has an underutilised corner begging for a purpose. Look for a spot that gets a little bit of natural light, but not necessarily direct, scorching sun. A forgotten corner in your living room, a small patch of wall next to your bed, or even the
space beside a bookshelf can be transformed. The key is to pick a spot that feels naturally quiet and out of the main foot-traffic flow. Before you commit, sit in the space for a few minutes. Does it feel like a place where you could relax? If yes, you’ve found your canvas.
Pick Your Leafy Companions
While “ivy” is in the headline, your best friend in Indian homes is often the humble Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum or Pothos). It's incredibly forgiving, thrives in a variety of light conditions, and its trailing vines grow quickly. Other great options include Heartleaf Philodendron, which has lovely heart-shaped leaves, or certain varieties of English Ivy (Hedera helix), which do well indoors if they get enough light and aren't overwatered. All these plants are readily available at local nurseries or online plant stores across India. Choose a plant in a small, lightweight pot to make hanging and mounting easier.
The Art of Damage-Free Hanging
This is the most crucial step for any renter. Your landlord will thank you, and you'll get your security deposit back. Forget nails and drills. Your new best friends are high-quality, transparent adhesive hooks. These can hold a surprising amount of weight and can be removed cleanly. Use them to create a path for your plant's vines to climb up or across a wall. Another brilliant method is using a tension rod (like the ones for shower curtains) installed vertically in a corner, from floor to ceiling. You can then wrap the vines around it. Leaning a lightweight bamboo ladder against the wall also provides a beautiful, functional trellis without a single hole.
Train Your Green Curtain
Once you have your plant and your damage-free hanging system, it's time to guide the growth. Don't just let the vines hang! Gently weave them through your ladder rungs, wrap them around the tension rod, or use tiny, clear adhesive clips to guide their path across the wall. You can create a cascading waterfall effect from a high shelf or make the vines frame a window. The idea is to be deliberate. Check on the vines every week or so and gently tuck and guide new growth. This is how you achieve that intentional, “breathtaking” look instead of just a plant in a corner.
Layer in the Cosy Elements
A plant on a wall is just a plant. An alcove is an experience. Now, you add the comfort. Place a comfy armchair, a plush floor cushion, or a soft beanbag in your new green corner. Add a small rug underfoot to define the space. A small stool or floating shelf (the kind that sticks on with adhesive strips) is perfect for holding your cup of chai and your current read. The final, most important touch is lighting. A warm-toned floor lamp or a string of fairy lights woven through the leaves will make the space magical in the evenings.
Easy Care for a Thriving Nook
The plants we’ve recommended are popular for a reason: they’re tough. For Money Plants and Philodendrons, the rule is simple: water them when the top inch of soil feels dry. They are more likely to suffer from overwatering than underwatering. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks to keep them dust-free and glossy. If the vines get too long, don’t be afraid to snip them. Pruning actually encourages fuller, bushier growth. You can even place the cuttings in a bottle of water to propagate new plants!
