A new chapter in Indian Railways history has begun, linking the nation's tech hub with its financial capital. The much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Express has started its service between Bengaluru and Mumbai, promising a revolution in overnight travel.
A Landmark Launch for Overnight Travel
On November 1, 2026, the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express service for South India was flagged off from Bengaluru's Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT), marking a significant milestone in connecting two of India's major economic powerhouses. This new overnight service aims to provide a faster, more comfortable, and modern alternative to existing travel options between Karnataka and Maharashtra. Regular services commenced on November 2 from Mumbai and are scheduled to begin on November 3 from Bengaluru, operating six days a week. The launch expands the Vande Bharat Sleeper network, which began with the Howrah-Guwahati route in January 2026 and was recently joined by a New Delhi-Varanasi service.
Revolutionising the Journey: Speed and Schedule
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is set to dramatically reduce travel time between the two cities. While the fastest trains currently take over 22 hours, the new service is expected to complete the journey in approximately 16 hours. The train is designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h, offering a significantly quicker commute. According to the schedule, the train will depart from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 p.m. and arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai at 11:55 a.m. the next day. In the return direction, it will leave CSMT Mumbai at 8:10 p.m. and reach Bengaluru at noon the following day, connecting key stations like Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Guntakal along the way.
A New Standard of Comfort and Design
This isn't just a faster train; it's a complete upgrade in passenger experience. The train consists of 16 air-conditioned coaches, with a capacity for 823 passengers across three classes: First AC, Second AC, and Third AC. The interiors feature ergonomically designed berths with better cushioning, improved ladders for accessing upper berths, and sensor-based lighting. Special attention has been given to creating a smooth, jerk-free ride with advanced suspension and better soundproofing to ensure a peaceful night's sleep. Amenities include individual reading lights, USB charging points at every berth, and a modern passenger information system.
Modern Amenities for the Modern Traveller
The Vande Bharat Sleeper incorporates features that set it apart from conventional overnight trains. The coaches are equipped with bio_vacuum toilets similar to those in aircraft, featuring odour_control systems and sensor_based taps. For added convenience, First AC passengers have access to a hot water shower facility. Safety is also a top priority, with automatic fire barrier doors, CCTV cameras, and the indigenous 'Kavach' automatic train protection system. A modular pantry is designed to provide quality onboard catering, ensuring a pleasant journey from start to finish.
The Future of Connectivity
The launch of the Bengaluru–Mumbai route is just the beginning. At the inauguration, the Railway Minister announced plans for a second Vande Bharat Sleeper service connecting the two cities via Hubballi, catering to the North Karnataka region. This expansion is part of a broader vision to modernise India's railway network, providing premium, high–speed connectivity across the country. By offering a service that competes with air travel in terms of time and comfort, especially when considering door–to–door travel, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to become a preferred choice for long–distance commuters.
