What is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, is a mandatory online pre-arrival form for almost all foreign nationals entering Malaysia. Introduced on January 1, 2024, it replaced the traditional paper-based landing cards to speed up immigration and enhance
security. It is important to understand that the MDAC is not a visa; it is a separate entry requirement. For Indian travellers, who can enjoy visa-free entry for up to 30 days, completing the MDAC is still a compulsory step. The form is completely free of charge and must be submitted through the official government portal. Any website requesting payment is not the official channel.
Who Needs to Fill Out the MDAC?
The rule is simple: almost every foreign visitor must complete the MDAC before arriving. This includes tourists, business travellers, and even those transiting if they need to clear immigration to switch terminals (for example, between KLIA1 and KLIA2 in Kuala Lumpur). However, there are a few exceptions. You do not need to fill out an MDAC if you are a Malaysian permanent resident or a holder of a valid Malaysian Long-Term Pass. Citizens of Singapore are also exempt. For all other international travellers, including Indian passport holders, submitting the MDAC is a mandatory part of the entry process for each trip.
A Step-by-Step Application Guide
The process is straightforward and can be completed online. First, visit the official Malaysia Immigration Department website to access the MDAC portal. You must submit the form within the three days leading up to your arrival in Malaysia. For example, if you are scheduled to land on August 20th, you can submit your form on August 18th, 19th, or 20th. You will need to provide your personal details (name, passport number, nationality), travel information (arrival and departure dates, mode of transport like a flight number), and the full address of your accommodation in Malaysia. After reviewing all details for accuracy, submit the form. You will receive a confirmation via your registered email, which you should save.
At the Malaysian Airport: The Final Steps
Upon arrival, the process is designed to be efficient. While it is wise to have a digital or printed copy of your MDAC confirmation, immigration officers can typically verify your submission electronically when you present your passport. Since June 2024, Malaysia has expanded its autogate facility to citizens from 63 countries, which now includes India. To use the autogate for a smoother entry, first-time visitors must complete the MDAC and then enrol their biometrics (fingerprints) and verify their passport at a manual immigration counter upon their first arrival. On subsequent visits, you can proceed directly to the autogates after submitting your MDAC for that trip.
