The festival of lights brings joy, family gatherings, and delicious feasts. But it can also disrupt our fitness routines. Here’s how you can embrace the celebrations fully while incorporating gentle movement to stay active and feel great.
Start Your Day With Intention
Before the day's
festivities kick into high gear, dedicate just 15-20 minutes to yourself. This doesn't have to be an intense workout. A simple session of Surya Namaskar (sun salutations), a few gentle stretching routines, or even some deep breathing exercises can work wonders. This small morning ritual helps set a positive and energetic tone for the day. It wakes up your muscles, gets your blood flowing, and puts you in a mindful state, making you more aware of your body's needs as you navigate a day filled with treats and social visits.
Turn Chores Into Active Moments
Diwali preparations involve a lot of work, from cleaning the house to decorating and arranging things for puja. Instead of seeing these as tiring chores, reframe them as opportunities for movement. Put on some music while you clean to make it more enjoyable and energetic. When decorating, involve more movement by taking extra steps, using stairs instead of elevators if you live in an apartment building, and consciously engaging your core as you reach and bend. This 'NEAT' (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) is an effective way to burn calories without formally 'exercising'.
Embrace the Power of Walking
Walking is one of the most underrated forms of physical activity. During Diwali week, make it a non-negotiable part of your day. Instead of driving to the local market for last-minute shopping, try walking if it's a safe and feasible distance. After a hearty festive meal, suggest a short family walk around the neighbourhood to look at the lights and decorations. A 15-minute post-meal stroll can aid digestion, help regulate blood sugar levels, and provide a wonderful opportunity for family bonding away from the distractions at home.
Dance Your Heart Out
What are festivities without some music and dance? Diwali parties and family get-togethers are the perfect excuse to let loose on the dance floor. Dancing is a fantastic cardiovascular workout that doesn't feel like a workout at all. It elevates your heart rate, improves circulation, and is a major mood booster. Don't be a wallflower; whether it's classic Bollywood tunes or festive folk music, join in the fun. You'll be burning calories, de-stressing, and creating joyful memories all at once.
Create a Quick Bodyweight Circuit
If you find yourself with a spare 10-15 minutes, a quick bodyweight circuit can be incredibly effective. You don't need any equipment, just a small space. Design a simple routine that you can do anywhere. For example, try a cycle of 10 squats, 10 pushups (on your knees or against a wall is fine), 10 lunges (5 per leg), and a 30second plank. Repeat this circuit two to three times. It’s a fast and efficient way to engage major muscle groups and keep your metabolism firing without taking too much time away from the celebrations.
Be an Active Host and Guest
Whether you are hosting a party or visiting friends and family, you can weave in more movement. If you're the host, stay on your feet, mingle with everyone, and help with serving and clearing. If you're a guest, offer to help your host. Instead of sitting in one spot for hours, make it a point to get up, walk around, and interact with different people. Play with the children in the family—their boundless energy can be contagious and will keep you moving. Every little bit of extra movement adds up.
