Engage Their Nose with Scent Games
A dog's primary sense is smell, and using it provides incredible mental stimulation that can be just as tiring as a long walk. You don’t need fancy equipment to play scent games. Start simple with a 'find the treat' game. Have your pet sit and stay in one
room while you hide a few of their favourite high-value treats in another room. At first, make them easy to find—partially under a rug or behind a chair leg. As they get better, you can hide them in more challenging spots. You can also use a snuffle mat or simply roll up treats in an old towel for them to nose through. For cats, you can hide treats or their favourite crinkle toy inside a cardboard box with some paper stuffing to encourage their natural hunting instincts.
Bring Out the Brain-Teasing Puzzle Toys
Puzzle toys are a fantastic investment for any pet owner. These toys require your pet to lick, paw, twist, or nudge parts to release a treat. This not only keeps them busy but also builds their problem-solving skills and confidence. You can buy them online or at pet stores, with varying levels of difficulty. If you don't want to buy one, you can easily make your own. A simple DIY puzzle is to place treats in the cups of a muffin tin and cover each cup with a tennis ball or another toy. Your pet will have to figure out how to remove the ball to get the reward. For cats, a food ball that dispenses kibble as they bat it around can turn mealtime into a fun activity.
Teach an Old Pet a New Trick
A rainy day is the perfect opportunity for a training session. It provides mental exercise and strengthens the bond between you and your pet. Even if your dog has mastered 'sit' and 'stay', there are always new, fun tricks to learn. Try teaching them 'shake paw', 'roll over', 'spin', or even something more complex like putting their toys away in a basket. Keep training sessions short, fun, and positive—around 10-15 minutes is plenty. Use positive reinforcement with treats and praise. This kind of focused attention is often exactly what a bored pet is craving. Cats can also learn tricks! With a clicker and some tasty treats, you can teach them to 'high-five' or come when called.
Build an Indoor Obstacle Course
If you have a bit of space, you can create a simple and safe agility course to burn off some physical energy. You don't need professional equipment. Use pillows or cushions to create low hurdles to jump over, a row of dining chairs to create a tunnel to weave through, or a blanket draped over two chairs to make a tent to run through. Lure your pet through the course with a favourite toy or treat. This activity combines physical exercise with focus, as they have to navigate the obstacles you've created. Always supervise your pet to ensure they are safe and make sure the obstacles are stable and appropriate for their size and physical ability.
Play the Shell Game
This classic game is a simple but effective brain teaser for dogs. All you need are three opaque cups and a small, smelly treat. Let your dog see you place the treat under one of the cups. Then, slowly slide the cups around to shuffle their positions. Give your dog the cue to 'find it!' and let them indicate which cup hides the prize by pawing or nosing at it. When they get it right, lift the cup and let them have the treat with lots of praise. This game sharpens their concentration and problem-solving skills, and most dogs find it incredibly engaging.
Have a Relaxing Spa and Grooming Session
While not as high-energy as other activities, a grooming session can be a wonderful way to bond and keep your pet entertained. Use the indoor time to give them a good brushing, which helps remove loose fur and keeps their coat healthy. Many pets find the sensation of being brushed calming. You can also practice gentle paw handling by checking their nails and paw pads. If your pet is comfortable with it, a nail trim is a practical task to get done on a rainy day. Finish with a gentle 'pet massage' to help them relax. This quiet, focused attention can be just as fulfilling as a game of fetch.
