Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh: The Paragliding Capital
Widely regarded as the best site for paragliding in India and the second-highest in the world, Bir Billing is a must-visit for any serious thrill-seeker. The takeoff point is at Billing, perched at an altitude of about 8,000 feet, while the landing site is in the village
of Bir, some 4,300 feet below. This huge drop allows for extended flight times, typically ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. As you soar, you are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Dhauladhar mountain range and the lush Kangra Valley. The area is so renowned that it has hosted the Paragliding World Cup. The best flying seasons are from October to November and March to May, when the thermal currents are ideal for long, high flights. Given its popularity, numerous certified operators are available, but it's always wise to choose one based on safety records and pilot experience rather than the lowest price.
Solang Valley, Manali: Soaring with a Himalayan Backdrop
Just 14 kilometres from Manali, Solang Valley is a hub of adventure sports, and its paragliding experience is one of the most visually dramatic in India. While the flights here are typically shorter 'sled rides' of about 10-15 minutes, the view is nothing short of spectacular. You'll glide over lush green meadows in the summer and pristine snow-covered slopes in the winter, with the towering peaks of the Pir Panjal range as your constant companion. There are generally two levels of flights available: a shorter, lower-altitude flight and a higher, longer one that often involves taking a ropeway to the takeoff point. This accessibility makes it a fantastic option for tourists who want to add a dose of adrenaline to their Manali trip without dedicating a full day to the activity. The ideal times to visit are between April and June, and again from September to December.

Instead of snow-capped peaks, you'll soar over rolling green hills, ancient forts, and the serene waters of Pawna Lake. Kamshet is known for its reliable and gentle wind conditions, making it an excellent place for beginners and a major training hub in India. A standard tandem flight lasts about 8-15 minutes, giving you ample time to enjoy the unique topography. The flying season is long, stretching from October all the way to May, with the post-monsoon and winter months offering the clearest skies and best conditions.
Gangtok, Sikkim: An Eastern Himalayan Spectacle
Paragliding in Gangtok offers a chance to fly in the shadow of the world's third-highest peak. On a clear day, the views of the mighty Kanchenjunga range are simply unforgettable. The flights take off from certified sites like Baliman Dara or Bulbuley Dara and offer a stunning aerial perspective of Gangtok town, verdant valleys, and the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Two types of flights are typically offered: a Medium Fly from a lower altitude lasting 5-10 minutes, and a High Fly from around 2,200 meters that can last for 20-30 minutes. This allows you to choose your thrill level. The best seasons to glide here are during the spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is clear and stable, providing a safe and breathtaking experience.
Nandi Hills, Karnataka: A Southern Sojourn
A popular getaway just 60 km from Bengaluru, Nandi Hills is the go-to destination for paragliding in South India. The ancient hill fortress provides a dramatic launchpad for a thrilling flight over the plains of Chikkaballapur. During a typical 10-20 minute tandem flight, you'll get panoramic views of the surrounding farmlands, vineyards, and even the distant Bengaluru skyline on a clear day. The activity is managed by licensed operators and is best experienced on days with safe wind conditions, usually during the drier months from October to March. It’s an accessible adventure for city dwellers and a perfect way to experience the serene beauty of this historic landscape from a completely new perspective.
