to the beloved hill station of Ooty (Udagamandalam). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this railway is a marvel of engineering, famous for being the only rack railway in India. This unique system uses a toothed rail between the running rails to haul the train up the steepest slopes in Asia, a section primarily between Mettupalayam and Coonoor. The journey covers 46 kilometres, navigating over 250 bridges and through 16 tunnels, climbing from 326 metres to over 2,200 metres in altitude.

Securing a seat on this popular train requires planning, as tickets, especially for the full Mettupalayam-Ooty route, sell out months in advance. The most reliable way to book is through the official IRCTC website or app. Use station codes MTP for Mettupalayam and UAM for Udagamandalam (Ooty). Fares are quite affordable, though they vary by class. First Class offers cushioned seats and more space, while Second Class and Unreserved are more basic. If you find the Mettupalayam-Ooty route fully booked, consider the shorter, but equally scenic, ride between Coonoor (ONR) and Ooty, which has more daily services and better ticket availability. A limited number of unreserved tickets are sold at the station before departure, but this requires arriving hours early and waiting in long queues with no guarantee of success.
Choosing the Best Seat and Route
For the best panoramic views, your seat choice matters. When travelling uphill from Mettupalayam to Ooty, a window seat on the right side is generally recommended for capturing the stunning valley views, especially on the Mettupalayam to Coonoor leg. For the downhill journey from Ooty, the left side offers the prime perspective. The full journey from Mettupalayam takes nearly five hours uphill and about three and a half hours downhill. The most visually dramatic part of the journey is the lower section between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, where the vintage steam locomotive pushes the train through dense forests and across spectacular bridges. From Coonoor to Ooty, a diesel engine takes over for a gentler ride past rolling tea estates and the famous Ketty Valley.

The blue and cream coloured wooden coaches evoke a sense of nostalgia. Be prepared for a simple journey; there are no restrooms on the train, so use the facilities at the station before you board. It’s a good idea to carry your own water and snacks for the ride. The train makes brief stops at charming, colonial-era stations like Hillgrove, Wellington, and Lovedale, where the steam engine also takes on water.
