Meeting a Growing Demand
In a significant move to bolster transportation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Railway Ministry has given the green light for a third Vande Bharat Express connecting Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. The decision, confirmed on August 20, 2026, by Union Minister Dr
Jitendra Singh, addresses the massive public demand for the service. The two existing Vande Bharat trains on this route have been operating with full occupancy since their services were extended to Jammu Tawi on April 30, 2026. The new train is expected to add much-needed capacity, making travel between the region's two major cities even more accessible. The existing services have already transformed travel, replacing long, arduous road journeys with a faster and more reliable alternative. This new addition solidifies the train's role as a critical lifeline for the region.
The Route and Key Halts
The new train, designated as Nos. 26407/26408, will run between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. Crucially, it will have a stop at Udhampur (officially Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station), fulfilling a long-standing request from the local population. This addition is expected to greatly benefit daily commuters and military families based in the area. The current route already includes stops at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal. The entire journey covers a distance of approximately 270 kilometres, navigating the stunning but challenging Himalayan terrain of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). The journey takes just under five hours, a significant reduction compared to road travel, which is often subject to delays from traffic and weather.
Timings and Schedule Expectations
While the exact timetable for the third service is yet to be announced by Northern Railway, it is expected to fill a gap in the current schedule. At present, two pairs of trains operate daily services. Train 26401 departs Jammu at 6:20 am to reach Srinagar at 11:10 am, while train 26403 leaves Jammu at 1:20 pm and arrives in Srinagar at 6:00 pm. In the return direction, trains depart Srinagar at 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. The new service will likely offer a late-morning departure from Jammu and an evening return from Srinagar, providing passengers with more flexibility. Passengers should monitor official announcements from Northern Railway for the final schedule and the date when commercial services will begin.
Fare Structure and How to Book
Ticket prices for the new service are expected to be in line with the existing Vande Bharat trains on this route. Currently, a journey in the AC Chair Car costs between ₹665 and ₹730, while the Executive Chair Car fares are approximately ₹1,280 to ₹1,340. These fares make the Vande Bharat an affordable alternative to air travel, which can be significantly more expensive. Once the new service is officially launched, tickets will be available for booking through the standard IRCTC website and mobile app. Bookings typically open under a 60-day Advance Reservation Period (ARP), so passengers planning their travel should keep an eye on the portal.
A Game-Changer for Tourism and Local Life
The Vande Bharat Express has already been hailed as a game-changer for Kashmir, dramatically boosting tourism since its inauguration. The service offers a comfortable, all-weather alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is often prone to disruptions from landslides and snowfall. Tourists have praised the scenic journey through mountains and valleys, with many calling it one of the most beautiful train rides in India. The enhanced connectivity has encouraged more families and pilgrims visiting Katra to extend their trips into the Kashmir Valley. Beyond tourism, the train is a vital link for students, traders, and families, making travel shorter, more reliable, and less fatiguing, thereby integrating the Valley more closely with the rest of the country.
