Beyond the Search Bar
For years, travel research meant typing keywords into a search engine. Now, generative AI is making the process conversational and intuitive. Instead of just searching for "beaches in Goa," travellers can now ask an AI tool to plan a five-day family-friendly
trip with a mix of relaxation and cultural activities, all within a specific budget. This shift from keywords to intent is the core of the change. AI platforms analyse user preferences, past behaviour, and even social media activity to deliver tailored suggestions, turning a tedious research process into a quick, interactive dialogue. Reports show a significant uptake, with some surveys indicating that as many as two-thirds of Indian travellers are likely to use AI for planning their next trip.
The Dawn of Hyper-Personalisation
The one-size-fits-all travel package is quickly becoming obsolete. AI's greatest strength lies in its ability to create hyper-personalised itineraries. Platforms like Pickyourtrail and The Tarzan Way use AI to curate journeys based on specific interests, whether it's a wellness retreat, a photography tour, or an adrenaline-packed adventure. These tools can sift through millions of data points—flights, hotels, local reviews, and weather patterns—to construct a detailed plan in minutes. This saves travellers significant time and, according to one study, almost half of users who try generative AI for travel planning find hidden gems they wouldn't have discovered otherwise. For one traveller with anxiety, an AI even designed a 27-day European tour focused on calm, offbeat spots, showcasing a level of nuance that goes far beyond standard booking sites.
An In-Trip Co-Pilot
AI's role doesn't end once the bookings are made. During the trip itself, it functions as a real-time companion. AI-powered assistants can help with on-the-fly language translation, suggest nearby restaurants based on your current location and time of day, or dynamically re-route your plans if there's unexpected rain. Augmented reality (AR) features are also emerging, allowing travellers to point their phone at a historical monument and receive instant information overlays. This technology is not just about convenience; it’s also enhancing safety. From real-time travel advisories to contactless hotel check-ins using facial recognition, AI is helping to streamline processes and give travellers greater peace of mind.
An Evolving Industry and Government Push
The Indian travel industry is rapidly adapting. Online travel agents like Agoda have launched AI-powered vacation planners specifically for the Indian market, sometimes even featuring Bollywood stars to build familiarity and trust. However, while many travellers are embracing AI as a co-pilot, most still want the final say in their decisions. The government is also investing in this transformation. Initiatives like the National Digital Tourism Stack, launched on World Tourism Day 2026, aim to use AI to make services from homestays to local guides more discoverable and accessible on a unified network. The revamped Incredible India platform also uses AI to offer personalised experiences and real-time updates, signalling a national strategy to blend technology with tourism.
