Massive Boost in Speed and Capacity
The most significant upgrade is the platform's sheer power. The new system is built to handle over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, a nearly fivefold increase from the previous capacity of about 32,000. This enhancement is specifically designed to tackle
the infamous Tatkal rush, where the old site would often buckle under pressure, leading to failed transactions and immense user frustration. Alongside this, the backend Passenger Reservation System (PRS) can now manage over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, up from just 4 lakh previously. For the average user, this translates to faster page loads, quicker search results, and a much lower chance of the site crashing during peak hours.
A Cleaner, More Intuitive Layout
One of the most common complaints about the old IRCTC portal was its cluttered and confusing interface. The redesign addresses this with a cleaner, lighter layout that is easier to navigate. Unnecessary pop-ups, distracting banners, and flashing graphics have been removed to create a more focused booking flow. This streamlined design not only makes the site more aesthetically pleasing but also helps users find information and complete tasks more efficiently, reducing the chances of getting lost in a maze of links and options.
Unified Search and a Fare Calendar
Previously, checking seat availability meant toggling between different classes like Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier one by one. The new portal introduces a unified view, displaying availability across all classes on a single screen. This small but crucial change allows for much faster comparison and decision-making. Another new feature is the fare calendar, which lets users compare ticket prices across different dates. This is particularly useful for travellers with flexible plans who want to find the most economical option without having to perform multiple searches.
Fewer Interruptions and Simplified Logins
Perhaps one of the most welcome changes is the reduction in booking interruptions. The new system has significantly cut down on the number of CAPTCHA verifications required during the process. While security remains robust, users will no longer have to decipher distorted text at every other step. Furthermore, the ability to save passenger details in a 'Master List' makes repeat bookings much faster, as you no longer need to manually enter names and ages every time. The checkout process itself has also been shortened, reducing the number of clicks needed to get to the payment page.
Smarter Features and Greater Accessibility
The updated website incorporates several smart features aimed at improving the user experience. For the first time, passengers will have the option to select their preferred seat, much like booking a seat in a movie theatre, subject to availability. The portal also integrates AI for features like waitlist confirmation predictions, which have reportedly improved in accuracy. To make the platform more accessible to a wider audience, it now supports multiple Indian languages. Additionally, it consolidates services for Divyangjan, students, and patients on a single platform, simplifying the process for those applying for concessions.
