Which Trains Are Getting the Upgrade?
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced these enhanced services on a mix of superfast trains, including two popular Vande Bharat Express services. The initiative aims to significantly improve passenger comfort and hygiene on these crucial
routes. The five trains now operating with the new system are: the New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express, the New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express, the Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express, the Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express, and the Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express. This rollout makes NFR the second zonal railway in the country to implement such a comprehensive, technology-backed service model. The services began progressively in mid-October 2026, marking a significant step towards modernizing the passenger experience.
A New Era of Cleanliness
The core of the new initiative is a more structured and accountable approach to cleanliness, officially known as On-Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS). This is more than just a simple sweep-up; it involves dedicated teams responsible for the regular and thorough upkeep of coaches throughout the journey. Responsibilities include the frequent cleaning of coach interiors, washroom maintenance, better waste disposal, and even ensuring the cleanliness of AC windows. This system has been evolving for a few years, but the latest version integrates technology to ensure the work is actually being done to a high standard, moving beyond inconsistent manual efforts.
AI and Digital Monitoring for Accountability
What makes this rollout different is its reliance on technology to enforce accountability. The new system uses a suite of digital tools to monitor service delivery in real time. This includes geo-tagged verification of services, which confirms that cleaning tasks were performed in the correct location, and GPS-based tracking of housekeeping staff. Furthermore, the railway will use AI-based cleaning assessments to evaluate the performance of the housekeeping teams, creating an objective measure of quality. This digital oversight is designed to replace outdated manual checks and ensure that the promised standards are consistently met, a frequent point of frustration for passengers in the past.
Faster Complaint Resolution
Beyond just cleanliness, the new system provides a single window for a variety of passenger needs. The 'Coach Mitra' facility allows travellers to easily register requests for cleaning, disinfection, linen, train lighting, air conditioning issues, and coach watering. The goal is to make lodging a complaint and getting a resolution as seamless as possible. On these five routes, the railway has set an ambitious target of resolving all passenger complaints within two hours. Any issue that remains unresolved after that timeframe will be automatically escalated to higher-level railway authorities for immediate attention. This structured process aims to eliminate the long waits and uncertainty often associated with onboard service requests.
How to Use the Service
While the specific interface for these five trains integrates with the new digital monitoring, passengers across the network can typically access services like Coach Mitra through several channels. The primary method is often through SMS. Passengers can send a text message to a designated number, usually 58888 or 9200003232, with their PNR number and a code for the service they need. For example, texting 'CLEAN' followed by the PNR number. Additionally, requests can often be logged through a web portal like coms.indianrailways.gov.in or a dedicated mobile app. The request is then forwarded directly to the onboard staff, and a complaint ID is generated for tracking. As part of the new system, real-time passenger feedback and star ratings will also be collected to help assess service quality.
