Embrace the Great Indoors
A rainy weekend is the perfect excuse to finally do all the things you say you never have time for. Transform your home into a cosy sanctuary. Consider having a movie marathon, complete with popcorn and blankets. Or, if you're feeling more active, try
an at-home workout or a yoga session. It's also an ideal time to get creative in the kitchen. Bake a batch of cookies, try a new elaborate recipe, or get the whole family involved in making something simple like bhel puri. For those with kids, building a pillow fort, organising a treasure hunt, or having a board game tournament are fantastic ways to keep everyone happily occupied away from screens.
Venture Out, But Safely
If you must head out, safety should be your top priority. Indian roads during the monsoon can be treacherous. Drive slowly, keep a significant distance from the vehicle in front, and ensure your tyres have adequate tread. Be extra cautious of waterlogged streets; it’s often impossible to tell how deep the water is or what hazards (like open manholes) lie beneath. If you encounter a flooded road, it's best to find an alternative route. When walking, wear footwear with good grip and stay clear of electric poles and fallen wires. Always carry a raincoat and keep your electronic devices in a waterproof bag.
Plan for Power and Connectivity
Heavy rains and storms can often lead to power cuts, so a little preparation goes a long way. Make sure your power banks and emergency lights are fully charged before the weekend. Download a few movies or shows onto your devices in case the Wi-Fi goes down. It's also wise to have a small emergency kit with essentials like a flashlight, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, and some non-perishable snacks and bottled water. Keeping your phone charged allows you to monitor weather updates and stay in touch with friends and family.
Explore Your Local Indoor Scene
A rainy day offers a great opportunity to explore indoor attractions that you might usually overlook. Many cities have excellent museums, art galleries, and cultural centres that are significantly less crowded during the monsoon. It's the perfect time for a quiet, contemplative visit. Alternatively, you could check out an indoor gaming arcade, a bowling alley, or a climbing gym for some active fun. Or simply find a cosy café, grab a hot drink, and enjoy a good book while you watch the rain fall outside. A rainy weekend can be a great time to discover a new favourite local spot.
Prioritise Health and Hygiene
The monsoon season brings an increased risk of water-borne diseases and other infections. It's important to be mindful of your health. Avoid street food, especially items that may have been exposed to the rain or prepared with unclean water. Drink boiled or purified water to be safe. Maintain good personal hygiene by washing your hands frequently, especially after coming in from outside. If you do get wet in the rain, change into dry clothes as soon as possible to avoid catching a chill.
