The Perfect Prep with Primer
The secret to long-lasting makeup in any weather begins before you even touch your foundation. A good primer is your first line of defence against humidity. It creates a smooth, even canvas for your makeup and, crucially, forms a barrier between your skin's
natural oils and your makeup. For rainy weather, opt for a silicone-based or mattifying primer. These formulas are excellent at filling in pores and creating a water-resistant shield that helps your foundation grip better and last longer. Apply a thin, even layer to clean, moisturised skin and give it a minute to set. This simple step is non-negotiable for preventing your makeup from sliding off in the middle of the day.
Build a Smudge-Proof Base
When it comes to foundation during the monsoon, less is more. Heavy, thick foundations are more likely to look cakey and separate in high humidity. Instead, choose lightweight, long-wear, and water-resistant formulas. Products like BB creams, CC creams, or tinted moisturisers are fantastic options as they provide coverage without feeling heavy. If you require more coverage, apply a waterproof foundation in thin, buildable layers. Use a damp makeup sponge to press the product into the skin, which helps it adhere better and creates a more natural, skin-like finish. This technique ensures your base stays put, even if you get caught in a drizzle.
Eyes That Defy the Drizzle
Eye makeup is often the first casualty of rainy weather, leading to the dreaded 'raccoon eyes'. To avoid this, waterproof everything is the mantra. Switch your regular eyeliner and mascara to their waterproof counterparts. Gel eyeliners tend to have more staying power than traditional pencils and are less likely to smudge. For mascara, consider a 'tubing' formula, which creates tiny water-resistant tubes around each lash, preventing flakes and smears. When it comes to eyeshadow, cream-based products are your best friend. Unlike powders that can crease in humidity, waterproof cream eyeshadows adhere better to the lid for a long-lasting pop of colour.
A Pop of Colour on Cheeks
Just like with eyeshadow, cream-based products tend to fare better on the cheeks during humid weather. Cream blushes melt into the skin for a natural, dewy flush that is less likely to look patchy or streaky if you get wet. Powder blushes can sometimes absorb moisture from the air, leading to an uneven application. If you have oily skin and prefer powder, apply it in light layers, but for most, a cream or liquid blush will offer a more durable, fresh-faced glow that lasts through the day. Simply tap it onto the apples of your cheeks with your fingers or a dense brush and blend it out for a seamless finish.
Lips That Last Through It All
Glossy lips might look great, but they don’t stand a chance against rain and humidity. For a look that lasts, matte is the way to go. Matte liquid lipsticks and lip stains are designed to dry down completely, offering incredible staying power without transferring or bleeding. These formulas are highly pigmented and create a bold look that will stay put through your morning coffee and an afternoon shower. If you find matte formulas too drying, look for modern comfort-matte options that provide longevity without sacrificing hydration. Alternatively, a lip tint will give you a stain of colour that won't budge.
Set It and Forget It
Once your makeup is perfectly applied, the final and most crucial step is to lock it all in place. This involves a two-part process: powder and setting spray. First, lightly dust a translucent setting powder over your T-zone and any other areas prone to shine. This helps to absorb excess oil and mattify the skin. Then, finish with a generous mist of a waterproof or long-wear setting spray. A good setting spray acts like a topcoat for your makeup, creating an invisible film that protects it from melting, fading, or creasing for hours. It's the ultimate insurance policy for your rain-ready look.
