For years, the dream of a seamless drive from Mumbai down the Konkan coast was hampered by the challenging conditions of National Highway 66. But that narrative is changing. The massive four-laning project of the Mumbai-Goa highway is now substantially
complete, with officials reporting that over 90% of the work is finished. This transformation promises to drastically cut travel time, with projections suggesting the journey to Goa could be reduced from 13 hours to as few as six or seven. While some stretches have faced delays and cost escalations, the main artery is finally delivering on its promise of smooth, fast travel, opening up the entire Konkan region for exploration.
First Stops: Alibaug, Kashid, and Murud
Your coastal escape begins just a few hours from Mumbai. Alibaug, the traditional gateway to Konkan, offers a mix of popular beaches and historic forts like Kolaba Fort. A little further south, the drive to Kashid beach reveals a stunning crescent of white sand and clear blue waters, perfect for a refreshing break. The journey then leads to Murud, home to the formidable Murud-Janjira, an unconquered sea fort that you can visit via a short boat ride. While the NH-66 is mostly smooth, the smaller coastal and village roads can be narrow and may require careful driving. An SUV or a car with good ground clearance is advisable if you plan to explore extensively off the main highway. Fuel stations can be sparse in remote stretches between major towns, so it's wise to refuel whenever you have the chance. Accommodation options range from luxury resorts in popular spots to charming homestays that offer an authentic taste of Konkani hospitality.
