From a Scientist/Engineer 'SC', the progression moves up through grades like 'SD', 'SE', 'SF', and so on, with each promotion bringing increased responsibilities and a higher pay scale. An engineer with a B.Tech degree may be promoted from 'SC' to 'SD' in about four years, a timeline that can be shorter for those with a Master's degree.
