A New Era for Kashmir Travel
For decades, the journey to Srinagar was a long and often arduous road trip. The game-changing Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a monumental engineering feat, has changed all that. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express on this line
has been the crowning achievement, connecting Jammu directly to Srinagar with unprecedented speed and comfort. This service, which became fully operational from Jammu Tawi in April 2026, has slashed travel time to under five hours, compared to the 8-10 hours previously required by road. The all-weather link provides a reliable alternative to the highway, which can be prone to closures from snow and landslides, making travel to the valley easier than ever before.
The Journey and Its Marvels
The route from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar is more than just a commute; it's a scenic spectacle. The train travels through the challenging Himalayan terrain, crossing 927 bridges and passing through 38 tunnels. The undisputed highlight is the journey over the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch, which stands 359 meters above the riverbed. As the train glides at speeds up to 100 kmph across this marvel, passengers are treated to panoramic views of the deep gorges and majestic Pir Panjal ranges. Another significant feature is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge. The train makes key stops including Udhampur, Katra, and Banihal, turning the journey itself into a memorable part of your Kashmir experience.
Booking Tickets and Choosing Your Class
Given the high demand, planning ahead is essential. Tickets for the Vande Bharat to Srinagar can be booked through the official IRCTC website or mobile app. It is advisable to book at least 30 days in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. The train runs six days a week and offers two classes of travel: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). While both provide a comfortable, air-conditioned journey, the Executive Class offers more spacious seating, and on some services, rotatable seats that can be turned to face the large windows, ensuring you don’t miss any of the spectacular scenery.
The Onboard Experience
The Vande Bharat Express is designed for comfort and convenience. The specially designed trainsets are equipped to handle the cold climate of the region, with advanced heating systems to maintain a pleasant temperature inside. Passengers can enjoy large windows for observation, onboard Wi-Fi, and an infotainment system. Catering is included in the fare, often featuring local Kashmiri specialities like Kehwa, providing a taste of the valley before you even arrive. The seats are airline-style recliners, and with ample legroom and modern, clean bio-toilets, the journey is as relaxing as it is scenic.
Making the Most of Your Arrival
Arriving in Srinagar by train places you right in the heart of Kashmir, ready to explore. From the Srinagar railway station, you can easily find transport to the city's famous attractions. Don't miss a Shikara ride on the serene Dal Lake, a stroll through the magnificent Mughal Gardens like Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, or exploring the historic old city. The convenient timing of the Vande Bharat, typically arriving before noon, allows you to check into your hotel or houseboat and begin your sightseeing on the very same day. The railway line not only connects you to Srinagar but also opens up access to other beautiful destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, making the train the perfect starting point for a comprehensive Kashmir itinerary.
