time. This can indicate that the ground beneath your house is slowly shifting, causing door and window frames to go out of plumb. These aren't just minor settlement issues; during the monsoon, they can be the first indication that the soil is saturated and losing its structural integrity. If you notice cracks widening, especially after heavy rain, it's a serious warning sign that the slope could be on the move.
Changes in Water Flow and Drainage
Water is the primary trigger for most landslides. Be alert for any changes in how water behaves on or around your property. This includes new springs, seeps, or patches of saturated ground appearing in areas that are usually dry. If you are near a stream or channel, a sudden increase or decrease in water flow, or water that turns from clear to muddy, can signal debris flow activity upstream. Blocked storm-water drains can also be a major contributor, as they force water to find new paths, often saturating vulnerable slopes. The appearance of bulging ground at the base of a slope is another red flag, indicating that water pressure is building up within the soil.
Tilting Trees, Poles, and Fences
Look for subtle changes in the vertical structures around your home. Trees, utility poles, or fences that begin to tilt may indicate slow-moving land beneath the surface. As the ground shifts, it takes these structures with it. Similarly, check ancillary structures like decks, patios, and outdoor staircases. If they start pulling away from the main building or tilting, it’s a strong sign of ground movement. These are often the first things to be affected by the slow creep of an unstable slope long before a catastrophic failure occurs.
Unusual Sounds From the Hillside
Your ears can be a crucial early warning system. Listen for unusual sounds, especially during and after heavy rainstorms. A faint rumbling sound that grows louder can signal an approaching landslide. Other distinct noises include trees cracking or boulders knocking together, which might indicate moving debris within the slope. These sounds are caused by the friction and collision of soil, rock, and vegetation as the landmass begins to give way. If you hear anything like this, the situation could be critical, and immediate evacuation to higher ground is the safest course of action.
The Danger of Unauthorised Construction
The stability of a slope is often compromised by human activity. Unchecked and illegal construction is a significant risk factor in many of Mumbai's vulnerable areas. These structures often lack proper foundations and are built without considering the area's natural drainage or soil capacity, placing immense pressure on the hillside. Deforestation and the cutting of slopes to create level ground for building further weaken the soil, removing the natural root systems that help hold it together. According to the Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP), informal settlements with poorly built environments are disproportionately vulnerable to landslides. Living near such construction zones increases your risk, as a collapse nearby could have a devastating domino effect.
What To Do and Who To Call
Recognising the signs is only the first step. If you believe there is an immediate danger, evacuate the area quickly and move to higher ground, away from the path of any potential debris flow. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regularly issues notices to residents in landslide-prone areas, urging them to move to safer locations during the monsoon. For emergencies, you can contact the BMC's disaster management control room. MHADA also operates a control room for reporting dangerous conditions in its buildings. Taking official warnings seriously is crucial; temporary relocation, while disruptive, is always preferable to risking lives. Community awareness and prompt reporting can make all the difference in preventing a tragedy.
