Indian Railways is rolling out a next-generation Passenger Reservation System (PRS) that marks a quantum leap in its technological capabilities. The new cloud-based platform, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), is designed
to handle a staggering 1.5 lakh ticket bookings every minute. This represents a nearly five-fold increase from the previous system's capacity, which stood at about 32,000 bookings per minute. The phased migration to this new system began in August 2026, aiming to replace a platform that, while upgraded over the years, had its roots in technology from 2010. Alongside the booking capacity, the system’s ability to handle enquiries—like checking PNR status or seat availability—is also getting a tenfold boost, from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute.
From Crashing Servers to Cloud Power
For years, booking a train ticket during peak hours, especially for Tatkal, felt like a lottery. Millions of users would log on simultaneously, leading to overwhelmed servers, frozen screens, and the dreaded 'service unavailable' message. This was a direct result of the old system's limitations. The previous PRS, while a workhorse, was not built for the explosive growth in online bookings, which now account for nearly 89% of all reserved tickets. Between June 2025 and June 2026 alone, over 57 crore tickets were booked online. The new cloud-based architecture provides the scalability and resilience needed to manage these massive traffic spikes. Instead of relying on fixed physical servers, a cloud system can dynamically allocate resources, ensuring the platform remains stable even when demand skyrockets during the frantic morning Tatkal windows.
How Big is 1.5 Lakh a Minute?
To put the number '1.5 lakh bookings per minute' into perspective, it helps to break it down. That’s 2,500 bookings every single second. Imagine an entire stadium's worth of people successfully booking tickets in under 30 seconds. This capacity rivals the peak transaction loads seen during major e-commerce festival sales in India. The upgrade places the Indian Railways' ticketing platform among the most robust high-volume transaction systems in the world. It’s a critical piece of national infrastructure, serving over 20.5 lakh passengers daily through its various channels. This isn’t just about making the existing process faster; it’s about future-proofing the network for decades to come, anticipating further growth in passenger numbers and the complete shift to digital interactions.
The End of ‘Book Now’ Anxiety?
So, what does this mean for the average passenger? The most immediate and noticeable impact will be during the Tatkal booking rush. The increased capacity is specifically designed to make this high-stress process smoother and more efficient. With the system capable of handling far greater transaction volumes, the chances of website crashes and payment failures should reduce dramatically. Early data from the new IRCTC beta website, which went live in July 2026, already shows a tangible improvement, with Tatkal bookings completed within the first three minutes increasing by over 5%. This upgrade, combined with a redesigned, user-friendly interface that simplifies the booking process, aims to reduce the anxiety associated with securing a last-minute ticket. For millions, it could finally mean the end of frantically clicking the 'Book Now' button with bated breath, hoping the system holds up.
