Visas and Getting Started
The first step for any international trip is sorting out your documents. Thankfully, both Laos and Cambodia offer straightforward visa processes for Indian passport holders. For Cambodia, you can get a Visa on Arrival for around $30 or apply for an e-Visa
online beforehand for about $36. Similarly, Laos provides a Visa on Arrival at major airports and land borders, costing between $30 and $42. An e-Visa option is also available, which can save you time at the border. Remember to carry a passport with at least six months of validity, a couple of recent passport-sized photos, and proof of your first few nights' accommodation.
Flights: The Smart Way to Southeast Asia
There are no direct flights from India to Laos, but that’s where budget travel strategy comes in. The cheapest way to reach the region is by flying into a major Southeast Asian hub like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Ho Chi Minh City on budget airlines. Round-trip fares from cities like Delhi or Kolkata to these hubs can be found for as low as ₹18,000–₹25,000 if you book a few months in advance. From there, you can take a short, inexpensive connecting flight to either Luang Prabang in Laos or Siem Reap in Cambodia to begin your journey.
The Classic Backpacking Route
A popular and logical route involves travelling overland through both countries, either from north to south or vice versa. A great starting point is northern Laos. Fly into Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town known for its serene temples and the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls. From there, travel south by bus or the new high-speed train to the adventure hub of Vang Vieng, famous for its karst landscapes and river activities. Continue to the capital, Vientiane, before crossing the border into Cambodia. In Cambodia, your first major stop will likely be Siem Reap, the gateway to the magnificent Angkor Wat temple complex. From Siem Reap, head south to the capital, Phnom Penh, to absorb its history and riverside charm, before potentially finishing your trip on the southern coast's islands like Koh Rong.
Daily Budget: How Little Can You Spend?
Laos and Cambodia are famously kind to the budget traveller. In Laos, a backpacker can comfortably manage on ₹1,800–₹2,500 per day. This covers a dorm bed in a hostel (starting from ₹500), delicious street food meals like sticky rice and noodle soup (under ₹150), and local transport. Cambodia is similarly priced, with a daily budget of around ₹2,000–₹3,000. Hostel dorms are widely available for ₹500–₹1,200 a night, and a filling meal from a local restaurant or street stall can be had for just a few dollars. Your biggest single expenses will likely be entry fees for major attractions like Angkor Wat, which has a one-day pass for $37.
Transport: Navigating on a Dime
Overland travel is an essential part of the Southeast Asian backpacking experience and a great way to save money. For long distances between cities, sleeper buses and minivans are the go-to options. An overnight bus journey not only gets you to your next destination but also saves you the cost of one night's accommodation. A bus from Vientiane to Vang Vieng, for example, costs around ₹700. For shorter distances within cities, tuk-tuks are ubiquitous and affordable, with most rides costing between ₹50 and ₹150. For maximum freedom in places like Vang Vieng or the 4000 Islands, renting a scooter for about ₹550 a day is a popular choice.
Free and Low-Cost Experiences
The best parts of travel are often inexpensive. In Luang Prabang, wake up early to witness the solemn procession of monks during the morning alms-giving ceremony. Climbing Mount Phousi for a panoramic sunset view costs very little. In Cambodia, beyond the main Angkor temples, there are countless smaller, less-visited ruins that are free to explore. Wandering through bustling night markets in Siem Reap or along the riverside in Phnom Penh costs nothing but offers a rich slice of local life. In southern Laos, simply relaxing in a hammock by the Mekong River in the 4000 Islands is an iconic and blissfully free activity.
