As digital transactions via UPI and mobile banking continue to soar, AI has become essential for securely managing vast volumes of data. Some banks are using generative AI to screen thousands of loan applications daily, with human employees stepping in to review high-risk or complex cases. This has led to a change in hiring patterns. While some banks report a decline in non-supervisory staff, the recruitment of supervisory staff and those with specialised tech skills is rising. Demand is high for professionals skilled in data science, machine learning, and AI governance, who can build and manage the systems that are making banking smarter and more efficient.

AI is beginning to make significant inroads in Indian healthcare, augmenting the capabilities of medical professionals. One of the most prominent applications is in medical imaging analysis, where AI algorithms can help radiologists detect diseases like cancer from scans with greater speed and accuracy. AI is also being used to streamline administrative tasks, manage patient data, and even assist in drug discovery. The rise of telemedicine, particularly in underserved regions, is being supported by AI-powered diagnostic tools and patient management systems. This integration is not about replacing doctors but providing them with powerful tools to improve patient outcomes. The career changes are geared towards professionals who can work at the intersection of medicine and technology, including bio-statisticians, clinical data scientists, and specialists in healthcare informatics.

As India's energy demand grows, particularly from digital infrastructure like data centres, companies are turning to AI to enhance efficiency and reliability. A recent survey revealed that around 35% of Indian power generation firms have already adopted AI in their core operations. The primary application is predictive maintenance, where AI systems analyse data from sensors on equipment to predict faults before they happen. This reduces outages and extends the life of expensive assets. AI is also being used for grid management and integrating renewable energy sources more effectively. The jobs here are shifting towards engineers and technicians who understand data analytics and can manage these AI-driven operational systems, moving from a reactive maintenance model to a proactive, predictive one.
The Rise of a Two-Tier Job Market
Across all these sectors, a common trend is emerging: the creation of a two-tier job market. The demand for experienced professionals with specialised AI skills is skyrocketing, while opportunities for entry-level roles focused on routine tasks are shrinking. Recent data suggests that for every job impacted by AI, more new jobs are being created. However, the skills required for these new roles are vastly different. This highlights a growing skills gap. The challenge for India's workforce is not necessarily a shortage of jobs, but a shortage of the right skills to fill them.
