The Core Difference: Secured vs. Unsecured
The fundamental distinction lies in collateral. A gold loan is a 'secured' loan, meaning you pledge your gold jewellery or coins as security to the lender. If you fail to repay, the lender can sell your gold to recover the amount. An unsecured personal
loan, on the other hand, requires no collateral. The lender gives you money based on your creditworthiness, which includes your income, employment history, and credit score. This makes personal loans inherently riskier for lenders.
Interest Rates: The Cost of Borrowing
Because a gold loan is secured by an asset, the lender's risk is much lower. This translates to significantly lower interest rates compared to personal loans. Gold loan interest rates can start from as low as 7.7% per annum, while personal loan rates typically begin higher, often around 10.5% or more, and can go up significantly based on your risk profile. If minimizing interest cost is your top priority and you have gold to pledge, a gold loan is almost always the cheaper option.
Your Credit Score: How Much Does It Matter?
This is a major point of divergence. For an unsecured personal loan, your CIBIL score is paramount. Most lenders look for a score of 700 or, ideally, 750 and above to approve a loan and offer a good interest rate. A low score can lead to outright rejection or a much higher interest rate. For a gold loan, your credit score is far less important. Since the loan is secured by your gold, lenders are less concerned about your past credit behaviour, making it an accessible option for those with a poor or non-existent credit history.
Loan Amount and Disbursal Speed
A personal loan amount is determined by your income and repayment capacity, and can go up to ₹40 lakh or more for eligible applicants. The amount you can get from a gold loan depends on the value of your gold. As per RBI guidelines, lenders can offer a loan up to 75% of the market value of the gold, a measure known as the Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio. When it comes to speed, gold loans often win. Since the documentation is minimal and the primary task is valuing the gold, disbursal can happen within a few hours. Personal loans, especially for those who are not pre-approved, can take anywhere from a few hours to several days due to the need for document verification and credit checks.
Repayment Tenure and Flexibility
Personal loans generally offer longer and more structured repayment tenures, typically ranging from one to five years, sometimes even up to seven years. This is done through fixed Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs). Gold loans, conversely, have shorter tenures, usually from a few months up to three years. However, they often come with more flexible repayment options. Besides EMIs, some lenders allow you to pay just the interest during the tenure and the principal amount at the end, or make bullet repayments.
The Verdict: Which One Should You Choose?
A gold loan makes sense if: you have idle gold assets, need money urgently, have a low credit score, and want the lowest possible interest rate for a short-term need. It is a powerful tool for quick liquidity without the stress of credit checks. A personal loan is the better choice if: you do not have gold to pledge, have a strong credit score (750+), require a larger loan amount than your gold can provide, and prefer a longer, more structured repayment plan. It's ideal for salaried individuals with stable incomes who want to keep their assets unencumbered.
