The RuPay Revolution in Your Wallet
For years, UPI payments were a direct debit from your bank account, offering convenience but no rewards. That changed when the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) enabled RuPay credit cards to be linked with UPI apps. Now, instead of your savings
account, your credit card gets charged when you scan a merchant QR code, allowing you to earn reward points on transactions that previously yielded nothing. This is a game-changer because it brings millions of small, everyday vendors into the credit reward ecosystem. Only credit cards on the RuPay network are eligible for this feature; Visa and Mastercard credit cards cannot be linked for UPI payments at this time. This simple change means every rupee spent can work harder for you, inching you closer to a tangible goal like a free flight.
Choosing the Right Card for Your Spends
Not all RuPay credit cards are created equal when it comes to UPI rewards. The key is to pick one that aligns with your spending habits and travel aspirations. For those embedded in the Tata ecosystem, the Tata Neu Infinity HDFC Bank Credit Card is a strong contender. Its RuPay variant offers 1.5% back as NeuCoins on most UPI transactions, with each NeuCoin valued at ₹1. These coins can be redeemed for flights on Air India Express, groceries on BigBasket, or electronics from Croma. Another excellent choice for travel enthusiasts is the Scapia Federal RuPay Credit Card, which is designed to turn spending into travel value. Other cards like the HSBC RuPay Credit Card also allow you to earn points that can be transferred to various airline partners, including Air India and Singapore Airlines. Before choosing, check for specifics like reward caps on UPI transactions, as many cards limit the points you can earn this way each month.
The Art of Converting Points to Miles
Earning points is just the first step; the real magic lies in how you redeem them. While redeeming points for cashback or vouchers is straightforward, transferring them to airline loyalty programs often yields significantly more value. Banks like Axis Bank and HDFC Bank have platforms—Travel EDGE and SmartBuy, respectively—that facilitate these transfers to airline partners. For example, Axis Bank allows cardholders to convert EDGE Reward Points to miles with partners like Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer, Qatar Airways' Privilege Club, and United's MileagePlus. The conversion ratio is crucial. A premium card like Axis Bank Magnus for Burgundy might offer a favourable 5:4 ratio (5 EDGE points = 4 partner miles), while other cards have less attractive rates. A business class ticket that costs ₹70,000 in cash might be available for 45,000-55,000 miles plus taxes, showcasing the immense value unlocked through smart transfers.
Maximising Your Earnings: Smart Strategies
To truly make your UPI spends fly, you need a strategy. First, identify your biggest spending categories and choose a card that rewards them generously. If you frequently shop at Tata brands, the Tata Neu card is a no-brainer. Second, always be aware of reward caps. For instance, the Tata Neu Infinity card caps the 1.5% UPI reward earning at 500 NeuCoins per month. Plan your high-value UPI payments accordingly. Third, understand that not all UPI transactions qualify for rewards. Payments for rent, wallet loading, and fuel are often excluded. Finally, the most important rule is to always pay your credit card bill in full and on time. The interest charges from revolving a balance will quickly wipe out any rewards you've earned, defeating the entire purpose of this strategy.
