A Major Boost for Five Key Routes
The Northeast Frontier Railway recently announced that it has rolled out enhanced on-board services for five key superfast trains. This makes NFR the second zonal railway in the country to implement this passenger-focused initiative. The upgrade applies
to the Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express, Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express, Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express, and two Vande Bharat Express services: New Jalpaiguri–Patna and New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati. The enhanced services began on the Dibrugarh-Mumbai LTT Express on October 11, with the other trains following suit around the same time.
What Does the Service Upgrade Include?
This initiative is not about new coaches, but about improving the journey itself through technology and better service delivery. The primary goal is to elevate cleanliness, hygiene, and overall passenger comfort. Upgrades include more frequent and regular cleaning of coaches, improved maintenance of washrooms, and efficient waste management. For passengers on overnight journeys, the timely distribution and collection of fresh linen are also part of the new service standards. A key feature is the introduction of a digital monitoring system to ensure accountability. This involves geo-tagged service verification and staff tracking through a centralised mechanism.
Focus on the Dibrugarh-Mumbai LTT Express
The inclusion of the Dibrugarh-Mumbai LTT Express (15946/15945) is particularly significant. This train covers a massive distance of over 3,100 kilometres, connecting upper Assam directly with the financial capital, Mumbai. The journey takes approximately 60 hours, making on-board services critically important for passenger comfort. This route is a lifeline for students, professionals, and families travelling between the Northeast and Western India. The service enhancements aim to address common passenger grievances on long-haul trips, ensuring a more pleasant and hygienic environment throughout the extensive travel time. Dedicated teams will also provide basic technical assistance and monitor water availability.
Faster Complaint Resolution and Feedback
One of the most passenger-friendly aspects of this upgrade is a focus on responsiveness. Dedicated on-board teams now have a target of resolving passenger complaints within two hours. Any issues that cannot be fixed within this timeframe will be escalated to the relevant railway authorities for prompt action. To ensure the system works, Indian Railways is also leveraging technology for feedback. Passengers will be able to give real-time feedback and star ratings. The NFR will also use AI-based assessments to monitor cleaning effectiveness, creating a system of continuous improvement based on actual passenger experience.
The Broader Push for Modernisation
This service upgrade complements Indian Railways' wider mission to modernise its network. For years, the focus has been on replacing older Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches with modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. LHB coaches are known for their superior safety features, such as an anti-climbing design that prevents coaches from piling up during accidents, and they offer a more comfortable ride at higher speeds. While this specific announcement focuses on service quality rather than a coach change, it aligns with the overall goal of enhancing the passenger experience. The plan to convert all mainline express trains to LHB coaches is expected to be completed by 2028, marking a new era of safer and more comfortable train travel across India.
