Why Soup is a Monsoon Essential
During the rainy season, our digestive systems can become sluggish and the damp weather makes us more susceptible to infections. Soups are an ideal meal choice. They are not only easy to digest but also a fantastic way to stay hydrated when you might
not feel like drinking plain water. By using ingredients like ginger, garlic, turmeric, and black pepper, which are common in Indian kitchens, homemade soups can become potent immunity boosters that help fight off common monsoon ailments like colds and flu.
Classic Tomato Shorba
There is a reason the classic tomato soup, or 'shorba', is a timeless favourite. Rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants from the tomatoes, it’s a brilliant choice for strengthening your immune system. An Indian-style shorba takes it a step further with the addition of spices like cumin, black pepper, and ginger, which not only add depth of flavour but also aid digestion and help clear congestion. For a simple preparation, blanch and puree fresh tomatoes, then simmer the puree with a tempering of cumin seeds, grated ginger, and a pinch of black pepper. A touch of fresh coriander at the end adds a burst of freshness.
Protein-Packed Lentil Soup (Dal Shorba)
Lentil soups are a staple across India for good reason. They are incredibly nourishing, packed with protein and fibre that keep you full and energised. A simple soup made from masoor dal (red lentils) or moong dal (yellow lentils) is light on the stomach and very easy to prepare. To make it, pressure cook the dal with chopped tomatoes and a pinch of turmeric. Once cooked, you can lightly blend it for a creamier texture. Finish with a 'tadka' of ghee, cumin seeds, and finely chopped garlic to enhance its flavour and add anti-inflammatory properties.
Ginger and Garlic Clear Soup
When you feel a cold coming on, a ginger and garlic clear soup is a powerful home remedy. Both ginger and garlic are revered for their natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making them perfect for fighting seasonal infections. This light and fragrant soup is simple to make. Just simmer vegetable broth with plenty of freshly grated ginger, crushed garlic, and a handful of chopped vegetables like carrots and mushrooms. The clear broth helps in hydration, while the potent spices work to soothe a sore throat and relieve congestion.
South Indian Pepper Rasam
Rasam is a tangy and peppery soup from South India that is celebrated as both a digestive aid and a remedy for colds. Its base is typically tamarind juice, which is simmered with tomatoes, turmeric, and a special blend of spices known as rasam powder. The key ingredient, black pepper, is excellent for clearing sinuses and relieving respiratory discomfort. While it can be enjoyed with rice, a warm bowl of rasam on its own is a deeply soothing experience, perfect for a drizzly evening.
Hearty Mixed Vegetable and Barley Soup
For a soup that feels like a complete meal, a mixed vegetable and barley version is an excellent choice. This soup is loaded with fibre from both the barley and a variety of seasonal vegetables, which is great for maintaining good gut health. The barley adds a wonderful chewy texture and makes the soup incredibly filling. Simply sauté your favourite monsoon vegetables like carrots, beans, and corn, then add vegetable stock and cooked barley. Let it simmer until the flavours meld together for a wholesome and nutritious meal in a bowl.
