A New Benchmark in Comfort
At the heart of the Vande Bharat sleeper is a complete reimagining of the passenger experience. Unlike conventional trains, these self-propelled units are designed for a smooth, jerk-free ride, thanks to superior coupling technology and advanced suspension.
The interiors are where the “premium twist” truly shines. Berths are wider and feature better cushioning, designed ergonomically for a restful sleep. Every passenger has access to a personal reading light and USB charging ports. The entire train is fully sealed, featuring automatic doors that create a quiet, climate-controlled, and dust-free environment, a significant leap from older train models. For the first time on Indian Railways, passengers in the AC First Class coaches will have access to hot shower facilities, a feature typically associated with luxury travel.
More Than Just a Place to Sleep
The premium experience extends beyond the berth. The train features 16 coaches, accommodating up to 823 passengers across AC First, Two-Tier, and Three-Tier classes. Sanitation has been overhauled with modern bio-vacuum toilets equipped with odour-control systems and sensor-based taps. Safety is paramount, with the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system integrated into every trainset, alongside CCTV cameras and advanced fire safety mechanisms. A modular pantry system is designed to serve fresh, regional cuisine, moving away from the limitations of older pantry cars. Even luggage has been thoughtfully considered, with dedicated spaces for large suitcases near entrances to keep cabins uncluttered.
Speed, Efficiency, and the Rajdhani Comparison
The Vande Bharat sleeper isn't just about comfort; it's about speed. Capable of operating at 160 km/h, with trial speeds hitting 180 km/h, these trains are set to drastically cut travel times on long-distance routes. Its distributed power system, where every alternate coach has its own motor, allows for rapid acceleration and deceleration, a key advantage over traditional locomotive-hauled trains like the Rajdhani Express. This means quicker turnarounds at terminal stations and a higher average speed across the journey. While the Rajdhani has been the gold standard for premium overnight travel for decades, the Vande Bharat sleeper is designed to surpass it in nearly every aspect, from ride quality and interior aesthetics to onboard amenities and overall journey time.
The Rollout and What Lies Ahead
The journey of the Vande Bharat sleeper from concept to reality has been swift. After the prototype was unveiled by BEML in Bengaluru in September 2024, the first commercial service was launched on January 17, 2026, between Kamakhya (Guwahati) and Howrah. This was followed by the inauguration of the second sleeper service, the Sant Ravidas Express, on July 17, 2026, connecting Varanasi with Chheharta (Amritsar). These initial routes target corridors with high passenger demand, aiming to provide a viable and attractive alternative to both existing trains and air travel. Indian Railways plans to progressively roll out more of these trainsets, with reports suggesting a target of 12 Vande Bharat Sleeper expresses by March 2027, eventually replacing Rajdhani fleets on major trunk routes across the country.
