A Storied Route Reimagined
The railway line between Sengottai in Tamil Nadu and Punalur in Kerala is more than just a transport link; it's a journey through history and nature. Recognised as one of India's oldest mountain railways, this track winds through dense forests, dramatic
hills, and gushing streams. The route is famed for its engineering marvels, including numerous tunnels and the iconic 13-Arch Bridge ('Pathimoonu Kannara Palam') near Thenmala. This historic bridge, constructed during the British era using only limestone, rocks, and jaggery, has been the backdrop for countless films and remains a primary attraction. For years, travellers have cherished this route for its raw, unfiltered beauty, and now, a new chapter in its story begins.
Inside the Vistadome Experience
The newly introduced coach is an Executive AC Vistadome, designed specifically for sightseeing. These coaches are a significant upgrade from conventional carriages, featuring expansive glass windows and a transparent glass roof, offering passengers panoramic, unobstructed views of the landscape. The seats are a key feature, with the ability to rotate so travellers can always face the direction of the best scenery. This design transforms the journey itself into the main event, allowing passengers to feel fully immersed in the verdant surroundings of the Aryankavu Pass and the wider Sengottai Gap. The goal is to blend the comfort of modern rail travel with the region's spectacular natural splendour.
Planning Your Scenic Journey
This special Vistadome coach is attached to the Madurai–Guruvayur Express (Train Nos. 16327/16328). The service begins on October 22, 2026, and is currently scheduled to run on a temporary basis until mid-January 2027. For the Madurai to Guruvayur direction (Train No. 16327), the coach will be available on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. In the return direction from Guruvayur to Madurai (Train No. 16328), it will operate on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Train No. 16327 departs Madurai at 11:35 a.m., reaching Sengottai at 2:30 p.m., and then begins its scenic leg through to Punalur, arriving there around 5:55 p.m. before continuing to Guruvayur.
Booking, Fares, and What to Expect
Reservations for this unique experience are open, and can be booked under the 'EV' or Executive Class code. The basic fare for the Vistadome coach journey is set at ₹515, while the full end-to-end trip from Madurai to Guruvayur costs ₹1,875. Given the novelty and the stunning views on offer, demand is expected to be high. Reports indicate that tickets sold out quickly for the initial weeks after reservations opened, so planning ahead is crucial. The journey from Sengottai to Punalur is the main attraction, taking you through key scenic points like Aryankavu, Thenmala, and across the Kallada River, offering views of the Punalur Hanging Bridge. The train makes brief one-minute stops at several smaller stations along the ghat section, allowing ample opportunity to soak in the views.
Unlocking Regional Tourism
The introduction of Kerala's first Vistadome coach is seen as a major boost for tourism in the region. This service not only enhances the travel experience but also aims to draw more visitors to explore the tourism potential of the Kollam-Sengottai corridor. The journey connects travellers to destinations like the Courtallam Waterfalls (also known as Kuttalam) near Sengottai and the Thenmala Ecotourism area. This initiative makes the journey itself a destination, appealing to nature enthusiasts, families, and photographers looking for a memorable and comfortable way to witness the majesty of the Western Ghats during its most vibrant season.
