The Tale of Two Realities
On one hand, the numbers look promising. A recent Nomura report highlights a significant net positive employment impact from AI in India. Between 2022 and August 2026, the country saw approximately 83,100 AI-related hires, compared to 31,921 layoffs linked
to the technology. This translates to about 2.6 new AI jobs for every role lost or affected. On the other hand, anxiety is palpable. A July 2026 survey by the professional network Blind found that a staggering 66% of AI and machine learning professionals in India expect layoffs or major headcount reductions in their teams within the next six months. This places the very people building the AI revolution among the most anxious groups in the workforce, second only to sales and marketing professionals.
Where Are the New Jobs Coming From?
The hiring boom is fueled by a fundamental shift in business operations. Companies across IT services, finance, and retail are embedding AI into their core functions, creating demand for new, specialized roles. This includes positions like AI specialists, data scientists, prompt engineers, and machine learning experts. Global Capability Centers (GCCs) of multinational corporations are major drivers of this trend, significantly increasing their hiring for AI, cloud, and cybersecurity roles in India. These centres are moving beyond cost-saving back-office work to become hubs for high-value innovation, which requires a workforce skilled in next-generation technologies. The demand is so high that NASSCOM projects it will cross one million roles by 2026.
The Source of the Anxiety
If hiring is so robust, why are even AI professionals worried? The paradox lies in the nature of the transformation. The jobs being created are not the same ones being automated. The Blind survey reveals that this fear isn't just about AI replacing humans wholesale; it's about shifting priorities and internal restructuring. Many workers report seeing 'quiet signs' like hiring freezes, budget cuts, and project cancellations as indicators of impending cuts. The anxiety among AI workers themselves may stem from the rapid evolution of the technology. As companies move from broad AI research to more focused, profitable deployment, teams may be restructured, and roles that were crucial yesterday might become redundant tomorrow. This constant churn creates a sense of instability even within high-demand fields.
The Great Skill Mismatch
The core of the issue is a widening skills gap. AI is automating routine, entry-level tasks, particularly in areas like customer support and basic coding. This disrupts the traditional career ladder where junior employees learned on the job. A survey cited by Nomura found that 55% of IT firms reported a decline in entry-level hiring. Companies are now prioritizing candidates who already possess specialized AI expertise, creating a two-tier labour market. There is soaring demand for experienced professionals but shrinking opportunities for freshers without proven, practical skills. This creates a bottleneck; while thousands of AI-related jobs are available, there's a severe shortage of qualified talent to fill them, with some estimates suggesting a talent gap of over 50% by 2026.
Navigating the New Job Market
For the Indian workforce, this new era is less about the threat of mass unemployment and more about the urgent need for adaptation. The evolution is not about a reduction of the workforce, but a redefinition of roles. Both employees and employers share the responsibility for bridging the skills divide. For individuals, the path forward involves continuous learning and specializing in high-demand areas like generative AI, machine learning operations, and AI compliance. For companies, success depends on moving beyond just deploying AI tools to redesigning talent models, which includes aggressive upskilling and reskilling programs for their existing workforce. As NASSCOM has pointed out, the goal is to create an 'AI-native' workforce that can collaborate with AI, not just use it.
