The New Visa-Free Policy Explained
After a period of uncertainty, the Thai government has confirmed that visa-free entry for Indian passport holders will continue. However, the key change is the duration of stay. The previous 60-day visa exemption has been revised, and Indian tourists
can now stay in the country for up to 30 days without a visa. This decision was made by the Thai cabinet on July 14, 2026, to walk back a more restrictive proposal that had caused confusion and a dip in arrivals from India. The new 30-day period is seen as a move to balance tourism promotion with tighter immigration controls.
Why Was This Change Made?
The adjustment addresses two main points. Firstly, it acknowledges the immense value of the Indian market, which is the third-largest source of tourists for Thailand, behind only China and Malaysia. Initial confusion over a potential end to the visa-free scheme led to a decline in Indian arrivals, prompting the government to provide clarity and reaffirm its welcoming stance. Secondly, the revision is part of a broader effort to manage immigration more effectively. Thai authorities had expressed concerns that the longer 60-day visa-free period was being misused by some for overstaying or conducting illegal business activities. By aligning the stay duration to 30 days, the government believes it can curb these issues while still accommodating the vast majority of tourists, whose average stay is around 7-10 days.
What This Means for Your Travel Plans
For most Indian tourists, this policy update simplifies travel planning. The 30-day visa-free window is more than sufficient for typical holiday itineraries. You can continue to book flights and plan your trips to Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and other popular spots without the need to apply for a visa in advance. This is a significant advantage over the previously feared alternative of reverting to a paid Visa-on-Arrival (VoA) system, which would have limited stays to 15 days and required additional fees and paperwork at the airport. If you are planning a trip longer than 30 days, you will need to apply for an appropriate tourist e-Visa before your departure to ensure your stay is compliant with Thai law.
Essential Checklist Before You Fly
While the visa process is streamlined, other entry requirements remain crucial. Before heading to the airport, ensure you have everything on this checklist. Your passport must have at least six months of validity from your date of arrival in Thailand. You should also have confirmed return or onward flight tickets and proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings for your stay. All travellers are required to fill out the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before arriving. After submission, you will receive a QR code that you must present at immigration. Though not always checked, it's wise to be prepared for immigration officials to ask for proof of sufficient funds for your trip.
