An Innings for the Ages
Playing against Nagaland in a Ranji Trophy Plate Group match, Chinmay Sutar constructed an innings of immense skill and superhuman endurance. The 29-year-old batter faced 517 deliveries for his unbeaten 400, a knock decorated with 46 fours and seven sixes.
The marathon innings was the pillar of Mizoram’s declaration at a formidable 581 for nine. The sheer scale of the achievement is staggering; Sutar’s score single-handedly dwarfed the contribution of the entire rest of the team, with the next highest score being just 69. It was a masterclass in concentration and determination, particularly notable for the stunning 190-run tenth-wicket partnership he forged with Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak, who contributed a vital 14 runs.

With this incredible feat, Sutar became only the second player in the 92-year history of the Ranji Trophy to score a quadruple century. The only other instance was B.B. Nimbalkar’s legendary 443 not out for Maharashtra way back in the 1948-49 season. Sutar's score is now the second-highest individual score in the tournament's history, surpassing Prithvi Shaw's 379 from the 2022-23 season. Globally, he joins a rarefied list of just 12 batters to have ever crossed the 400-run mark in a first-class innings, a list that includes icons like Don Bradman and Brian Lara.
The Mumbai Man in Mizoram
Sutar’s journey to this historic moment is as compelling as the innings itself. A product of Mumbai's famously competitive cricket ecosystem, he has previously represented the domestic powerhouse in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His move to play for Mizoram as a professional is part of a broader trend in Indian cricket where experienced players from established states lend their expertise to Plate Group teams, raising the quality of competition across the board. This performance is a powerful validation of that system. It also marks a moment of powerful redemption for Sutar, who was tragically run out for 99 on his first-class debut in the previous round.
A Landmark for Plate Group Cricket
This achievement is not just a personal milestone for Chinmay Sutar; it is a monumental event for Mizoram cricket. For a Plate Group team, which operates in a tier below the Elite Groups of the Ranji Trophy, such a record-breaking performance brings invaluable attention and respect. It demonstrates the depth of talent present throughout India's domestic structure and serves as an inspiration for cricketers in emerging states. Sutar’s knock puts Mizoram on the map in a way few other events could, proving that with the right talent and application, historic feats are possible regardless of the team's historical standing.
