Confirm Your Documents and Tickets
Before you pack a single thing, get your paperwork in order. You will receive an e-ticket or tour voucher from IRCTC after booking; print a copy and save a digital version to your phone. Most importantly, every traveller must carry a valid, original government-issued
photo ID. Accepted forms of identification include an Aadhaar card, PAN card, Voter ID, or Passport. For passengers travelling on concessional tickets, such as for senior citizens, carrying the relevant proof in original is also mandatory. Ensure your ID details exactly match the name on your ticket to avoid any issues during verification by the Ticket Checking Examiner (TTE).
Understand Your Package Inclusions
A key part of preparation is knowing what IRCTC has already arranged for you. Most six-day rail tour packages typically include your train journey, accommodation (which can range from dormitories to budget hotels depending on your package tier), specified meals (often breakfast and dinner), and local sightseeing in a bus or car. However, things like monument entrance fees, camera charges, tips, and any meals not explicitly mentioned in the itinerary are usually excluded and will be your own expense. Carefully read the 'inclusions and exclusions' section of your specific tour package on the IRCTC Tourism website to prevent any surprises.
Pack Smart for Train and Destination
Packing for a multi-day train journey requires a balance of comfort and practicality. On the train, wear loose, breathable clothing. Since AC coaches can get chilly, a light jacket, shawl, or blanket is essential for a comfortable night's sleep. For sightseeing, pack comfortable walking shoes or sneakers, as many itineraries involve a fair amount of walking. Other essentials include a power bank for your devices, a small lock and chain for securing your luggage under the seat, and any personal medications. It's also wise to carry your own hand sanitiser, wet wipes, and a small first-aid kit with basics like pain relievers and plasters.
Plan for Meals and Snacks
While your package includes some meals, there will be times, especially during long train transits, when you might need to arrange your own food. While many long-distance trains have pantry cars and vendors, carrying some of your own non-perishable snacks like nuts, biscuits, or dry fruits is a good idea. Also, carry a reusable water bottle that you can refill. For meals not covered in the package, you can use IRCTC's e-catering service 'Food on Track' via its app or other food delivery apps like Zoop to get meals delivered to your seat at major stations.
Prepare for the Journey Itself
Indian railway stations can be crowded and navigating them can take time, so always plan to arrive at least 30-45 minutes before your train's scheduled departure. Keep your ticket and ID handy for easy access. Be aware that train delays can be common, so it's best to have a flexible mindset. For entertainment during long stretches of travel, download movies or podcasts beforehand, or bring a book. Keep your valuables like your wallet, phone, and electronics in a small day bag that you can keep with you at all times, even when you go to the washroom.
