The dream of a quick seaside escape from Mumbai is now a reality, thanks to two major infrastructure marvels: the Mumbai Coastal Road and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). Previously,
a road trip to Alibaug was a test of patience, often taking over three hours. Today, this journey has been dramatically shortened. By seamlessly connecting South Mumbai to the MTHL, the Coastal Road allows drivers to bypass city traffic and get on the fast track to the coast. The journey from Worli to Marine Drive, which used to take up to 45 minutes, now takes less than 10. This integrated network has redefined weekend travel for Mumbaikars.
Your Route: From City to Coast in 2 Hours
The drive is straightforward. Start by getting on the Mumbai Coastal Road, which smoothly leads to the entrance of the MTHL at Sewri. Crossing the 21.8 km long sea bridge is an experience in itself, offering panoramic views of the water. Once you exit the MTHL at Chirle, you will connect to NH 66. From there, it's a scenic drive through Pen and Poynad to reach Alibaug town. The entire journey now takes approximately two to two and a half hours, depending on your starting point and traffic. The toll for a one-way trip for a car on the Atal Setu is ₹250. Remember, two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws are not permitted on the bridge.
First Stop: The Charms of Alibaug
Once you arrive, Alibaug welcomes you with its laid-back coastal vibe. The main Alibaug Beach is the most accessible and offers beautiful sunset views. A key attraction here is the 17th-century Kolaba Fort, a sea fortress that can be reached by a short walk during low tide or by boat. For those seeking more activity, Nagaon Beach is the hub for water sports like parasailing, jet-skiing, and banana boat rides. If peace and quiet are what you seek, the beaches of Varsoli and Kihim are perfect for a quiet stroll and birdwatching.
The Scenic Drive to Murud
From Alibaug, the journey continues south to Murud, which is approximately 50-60 kilometres away. The drive itself is a highlight, taking you along winding coastal roads flanked by lush greenery. This leg of the trip takes about an hour and a half, offering glimpses of rural Konkan life. The route passes through smaller towns and villages, providing a stark, refreshing contrast to the city you left behind. This drive is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or a fresh coconut.
Exploring Murud and Janjira Fort
Murud is best known for the formidable Murud-Janjira Fort, an unconquered marvel of military architecture situated on an island just off the coast. To reach the fort, you'll take a small sailboat from the village of Rajpuri. Exploring its massive walls, cannons, and freshwater lakes is a journey back in time. Besides the fort, Murud Beach offers a long, clean stretch of black sand, which is calmer and less crowded than many of Alibaug's beaches. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the tranquil atmosphere before your drive back to the city.

To make the most of your coastal escape, a little planning goes a long way. The best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant. Always check the tide timings online before planning your visit to Kolaba Fort. While the MTHL has drastically cut travel time, it's still wise to start early from Mumbai, especially on a long weekend, to avoid any potential congestion at the toll plaza. Accommodation options range from luxury villas and resorts to quaint homestays, so book in advance. Most importantly, keep your itinerary relaxed; the point of this trip is, after all, to rest.
