From Mainframes to Smartphones of the Sky
For decades, space was the exclusive domain of massive, costly satellites. These behemoths, often weighing several tonnes and costing billions, were like the mainframe computers of the 1960s—powerful, but rare and accessible only to a few government agencies.
Today, the industry is pivoting to small satellites, or 'smallsats'. Weighing anywhere from under 500 kg down to just a few kilograms, these are the celestial equivalent of smartphones. They are built faster, cheaper, and leverage commercially available electronics, drastically lowering the barrier to entry for companies, universities, and emerging space nations. This shift means more players can get involved, fostering a new wave of innovation.
The Small-Sat Advantage: Cost, Speed, and Swarms
The primary driver of this acceleration is economics. Building a small satellite costs a fraction of a traditional one, and launching it is also significantly cheaper, often by piggybacking on larger rocket missions. This affordability allows for rapid iteration; companies can design, build, and launch a satellite in a couple of years, not a decade. This shortened cycle allows new technologies to be tested in orbit quickly. Furthermore, their small size makes it feasible to launch them in large groups, or 'constellations'. Instead of relying on a single, vulnerable satellite, organisations can deploy a network of dozens or even hundreds of smallsats that work together to provide continuous global coverage for services like high-speed internet, real-time Earth imaging, and advanced weather tracking.
India's Ascent in the Small-Sat Race
India is rapidly carving out a significant role in this new space era. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has developed the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), a rocket designed specifically to place small satellites of up to 500 kg into low Earth orbit on a 'launch-on-demand' basis. After its first successful commercial flight in 2023, the SSLV is positioned as a cost-effective and reliable launch option for the booming global market. Beyond ISRO, a vibrant ecosystem of private startups has emerged since the sector was opened to private participation. Companies like Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, which launched its Vikram-1 rocket in July 2026, and AgniKul Cosmos are developing their own small launch vehicles. This private-sector energy, supported by government policy, is creating a dynamic domestic industry poised for global competition.
New Frontiers for Indian Innovation
The applications for India are vast and transformative. Small satellite constellations are crucial for bridging the digital divide, with companies aiming to bring reliable broadband to the country's most remote regions. In agriculture, frequent satellite imagery can monitor crop health, optimise water usage, and improve yields. For disaster management, they provide critical, real-time data for tracking floods and wildfires. Moreover, this technology is vital for national security, enabling persistent surveillance of borders and maritime areas through dedicated satellite constellations. From empowering farmers to securing the nation and connecting the unconnected, smallsats are becoming a cornerstone of India's technological and economic aspirations.
