That distinct musty odour is primarily caused by the rapid growth of mould and mildew. During the monsoon, outdoor humidity levels can soar, and this moisture-laden air infiltrates our homes. When indoor humidity rises above 50-60%, it creates the perfect
breeding ground for microscopic fungi. These organisms thrive on damp surfaces like walls, wooden furniture, fabrics, and even in hidden spots behind cupboards or under carpets. As they grow, they release gases known as microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), which produce the characteristic stale, musty smell. Poor ventilation traps this damp air, accelerating the process and allowing the odour to permeate the entire house.
More Than an Odour: Potential Health Concerns
While many moulds are harmless, prolonged exposure to some types can pose health risks, especially for certain individuals. The tiny spores released by mould can trigger allergic reactions, leading to symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, coughing, and skin rashes. For people with asthma, exposure can worsen their symptoms or even trigger attacks. Infants, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable to more severe reactions. The World Health Organization has linked indoor dampness and mould to respiratory symptoms and the exacerbation of asthma. Therefore, tackling the musty smell is not just about comfort; it's about maintaining a healthy living environment.
Let It Breathe: The Power of Ventilation
The first and most crucial line of defence against monsoon dampness is improving air circulation. Trapped, stagnant air is moisture's best friend. Make it a habit to open windows and doors for at least 15-30 minutes daily, especially during dry spells or when the rain subsides. This practice, known as cross-ventilation, pushes stale, humid air out and brings fresh air in. Use exhaust fans in kitchens while cooking and in bathrooms during and after showers to expel moisture-rich air immediately. Ceiling fans and standing fans can also help keep the air moving, preventing moisture from settling on surfaces.
Actively Fight Moisture: Dehumidifying Solutions
When ventilation isn't enough, you need to actively remove water from the air. An electric dehumidifier is the most effective tool for this, designed to pull moisture from the air and maintain optimal humidity levels. However, there are also several effective and budget-friendly DIY methods. Placing bowls of rock salt or baking soda in damp areas can help absorb moisture from the air. Activated charcoal is another excellent option, as it absorbs both moisture and odours; place it in small breathable bags in wardrobes and cabinets. For a simple homemade dehumidifier, you can drill holes in one bucket, fill it with rock salt, and place it inside a second, solid bucket to collect the water that drips down.
Wardrobes and Fabrics: Protecting Your Belongings
Clothes and linens are particularly susceptible to developing a musty smell. Ensure clothes are completely dry before storing them. Leaving even slightly damp clothes in a closed wardrobe is an open invitation for mildew. To protect stored items, place moisture absorbers like silica gel packs (often found in new shoe boxes or bags) or small cloth bags filled with neem leaves or camphor inside your cupboards. Avoid over-stuffing wardrobes to allow air to circulate between garments. If clothes do develop an odour, re-washing them with a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle can help neutralise the smell before drying them thoroughly.
Cleaning and Prevention: A Proactive Approach
Regular cleaning is essential during the monsoon. Wipe down walls, window sills, and furniture with a dry cloth to prevent moisture buildup. If you spot any visible mould (often appearing as black, green, or white patches), it's important to clean it immediately. A solution of white vinegar and water can be effective for cleaning hard surfaces. Pay close attention to areas prone to dampness, such as under sinks, around windows, and in bathroom corners. Also, consider pulling furniture slightly away from walls to improve airflow and prevent moisture from getting trapped behind them.
