A New Standard in Train Travel
Before looking at destinations, it’s worth understanding what makes the Vande Bharat Express a genuine upgrade for travellers. As India's first semi-high-speed train, it significantly cuts down journey times. But the improvements go beyond just speed.
The experience onboard is closer to air travel, with automatic doors, ergonomic reclining seats, and large windows for panoramic views. Executive Class coaches even feature rotating seats, allowing groups to face each other. Onboard Wi-Fi, GPS-based passenger information screens, and modern bio-vacuum toilets enhance comfort and convenience. This focus on the passenger experience means the holiday effectively starts the moment you board, not when you arrive.
From Delhi: Spiritual Journeys and Hill Retreats
For residents of the capital, the Vande Bharat has unlocked destinations that were previously exhausting weekend trips. The New Delhi to Varanasi route, the first to be inaugurated, reduces the journey to the spiritual city to just eight hours. This makes it possible to attend the evening Ganga Aarti after arriving and spend a full next day exploring before catching a return train. Similarly, the train to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra also takes about eight hours, turning a major pilgrimage into a manageable weekend affair. For those craving a break in the hills, the service to Dehradun takes under five hours, serving as a gateway to Mussoorie and the surrounding Doon Valley.
From Mumbai: Coastal Escapes and Heritage Trails
Mumbaikars can now escape the city with greater ease. The route to Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, taking between five and six hours, connects two major business hubs and opens up Gujarat's rich heritage for a quick cultural tour. The journey itself becomes scenic during the monsoon. Perhaps the most celebrated route is the one to Goa, which offers stunning views of the Western Ghats, especially during the rainy season. It provides a comfortable, hassle-free alternative to a long drive or a chaotic airport experience for those seeking a beach holiday. Another popular option is the service to Sainagar Shirdi, which allows for a spiritual day trip in just over five hours.
From the South: Connecting Cultural Capitals
In South India, the Vande Bharat network is weaving together major cultural and IT hubs. The Chennai-Mysuru service, which passes through Bengaluru, has become a favourite. It connects three of the south's most important cities, making it seamless for tourists to explore the palaces of Mysuru after a stop in the Garden City of Bengaluru. The travel time of about six and a half hours has made a royal weekend getaway from Chennai a practical reality. Further south, routes connecting Chennai with cities like Tirunelveli and Madurai are boosting regional tourism and pilgrimage circuits, making ancient temple towns more accessible than ever before.
The Future: Sleeper Coaches for Overnight Journeys
The evolution of high-speed travel is not stopping with chair cars. Indian Railways has already started rolling out Vande Bharat sleeper trains, designed for longer overnight routes. These trains aim to compete with Rajdhani services on major corridors like Delhi-Mumbai and Bengaluru-Mumbai, promising significant time savings of several hours. The first services began in early 2026, offering multi-class berths that are more comfortable than existing sleeper coaches. This development will further redefine long-distance travel, making cross-country trips faster and more comfortable, and bringing even more destinations within the realm of a long weekend getaway.
