The IMD's National Forecast
An active monsoon phase is currently underway, influenced by a deep depression that moved inland from the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across central, eastern, and northwestern
India. This vigorous spell is expected to continue through the upcoming weekend, affecting more than 20 states with intense showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. The weather system has already brought significant rainfall to states like Odisha, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh. Authorities have been advised to monitor vulnerable areas closely as the saturated ground increases the risk of flash floods and waterlogging.
Regions Under High Alert
Several states are under specific warnings for the coming days. The IMD has issued alerts for extremely heavy rainfall over Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha. An orange alert has also been issued for Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, signaling the likelihood of very heavy rain. In central India, widespread rainfall is expected to continue over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh into the weekend. The Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are particularly vulnerable, with an increased risk of landslides and flash floods due to continuous rainfall. Eastern states like Odisha and Jharkhand, which have already received heavy downpours, remain on alert.
Impact on Weekend Travel
The intense monsoon spell poses significant challenges for travellers. The IMD has explicitly warned of travel disruptions, including localized flooding, reduced visibility on roads, and waterlogging in urban areas. In hilly regions, the primary dangers are landslides and flash floods, which can lead to sudden road closures. Authorities advise against night driving in the hills, where visibility is poor and risks are higher. Air and rail travel may also face delays or diversions due to poor weather conditions. It is crucial for anyone planning to travel to build extra buffer time into their schedules and stay updated on the status of their routes.
Safety First: Essential Travel Precautions
If travel is unavoidable, taking precautions is paramount. Always check the latest district-level weather alerts from the IMD before and during your journey. Your packing list should include rain gear like a sturdy raincoat and waterproof footwear, a first-aid kit, a power bank for your electronics, and extra drinking water and dry snacks. To protect your gadgets, use waterproof bags or ziplock pouches. Before starting a road trip, ensure your vehicle is in good condition, with special attention to tyres, brakes, and wipers. While driving, reduce your speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and never attempt to cross flooded roads.
Health and Other Considerations
The monsoon season also brings a higher risk of water-borne diseases. It is advisable to avoid street food and drink only bottled or boiled water. Sticking to freshly cooked, hot meals can help prevent stomach ailments. In remote areas, digital payments might be unreliable due to network issues, so carrying some emergency cash is a wise move. When booking accommodation, consider options with flexible cancellation policies in case your plans are forced to change at the last minute due to the weather. Ultimately, the safest approach during periods of intense rainfall is to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve.
