For those who prefer to trade highway speeds for tranquil scenery, the route via Kanakapura, Malavalli, and Bannur before joining the main highway is a fantastic alternative. This two-lane road is often less congested, especially on weekends, and winds through rural Karnataka, offering a more immersive countryside experience. While this route may have fewer large restaurants and amenities, it rewards drivers with peaceful landscapes and a more relaxed pace. It's a great choice for seasoned drivers looking to escape the traffic.

The drive to Coorg is dotted with attractions that are worth a detour. Just outside Mysore lies Srirangapatna, a town rich in history with sites like Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace. A major highlight is the town of Bylakuppe, home to the magnificent Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple, which is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in South India. Further along, near Kushalnagar, you can visit the Dubare Elephant Camp on the banks of the river Kaveri for a chance to see elephants up close. Tips for a Safe and Smooth Winter Drive
Driving in the ghat sections of Coorg during winter requires some preparation. Fog can be a major hazard in the early mornings and evenings, so use your low-beam headlights and fog lamps, not high beams, which can reflect off the mist and reduce visibility. Drive slowly and honk at blind curves and hairpin bends. The roads can be slippery from the mist, so maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and apply brakes gently. Finally, pack some light woollens, as the evenings and mornings in Coorg can be quite chilly.
