For decades, the go-to travel hack was simple: check the weather at your origin and destination. If both looked clear enough, you were generally safe. Airlines operated on simpler schedules, air traffic was less dense, and the primary concerns were major
storms directly over an airport. This binary approach—good weather here, good weather there—served travellers well. It was a time when the journey between two points was largely assumed to be clear if the endpoints were. But the nature of weather, air travel, and our urban infrastructure has changed dramatically, rendering this old habit obsolete.
The Sky In Between Matters
A flight is not a teleportation device. The journey of hundreds or thousands of kilometres between cities is now a critical variable. Modern aviation faces intensified en-route weather challenges. Intense monsoon systems can create vast networks of thunderstorms, turbulence, and icing conditions that flights must navigate. Pilots will divert around these dangerous convective cells, adding significant distance, time, and fuel burn to the flight. A forecast that looks benign at the airports can hide a turbulent, delay-inducing minefield in the skies between them, turning a direct route into a prolonged, winding detour.
When the Tarmac Is an Island
Even if the sky is perfectly clear, your flight might not take off or have anywhere to park. The biggest disruptor is often on the ground. Indian cities are increasingly prone to urban flooding due to rapid, often unplanned, concretisation and overwhelmed drainage systems. Heavy rainfall can lead to severe waterlogging, not just on city streets but on airport tarmacs and runways themselves. Airports in Mumbai, Chennai, and Cochin have been completely shut down in the past due to flooding. More critically for the passenger, getting to the airport becomes an odyssey. Widespread traffic snarls and disruptions to local train services due to waterlogged roads can mean you miss your flight, even if it's scheduled to depart on time.
The Domino Effect of Congestion
India's airspace is a finely balanced network. A single delay at a major hub like Delhi or Mumbai has a ripple effect that cascades across the country. One aircraft is typically scheduled to fly multiple routes in a single day. If its first flight is delayed by bad weather in Mumbai, its subsequent flights from Bengaluru to Kolkata, and then Kolkata to Guwahati, will also be delayed, even if the weather in those cities is perfect. This is known as a cascading delay. During the monsoon, when multiple airports are facing operational challenges, this domino effect is magnified, leading to widespread network instability that a simple two-city weather check cannot predict.
How to Travel Smarter This Monsoon
So, what should a savvy traveller do? First, expand your information sources beyond a basic weather app. Check airline advisories frequently; they often warn of potential system-wide disruptions. Use advanced flight tracking apps like FlightAware or Flighty, which can track your specific inbound aircraft and alert you to delays long before the airline does. Monitor real-time city traffic maps on the day of your travel. Build in a generous buffer—arrive at the airport much earlier than you normally would. If possible, choose direct flights to avoid the risk of a misconnection, and opt for early morning departures, which tend to have fewer accumulated delays from the previous day. And always pack essentials in your carry-on, just in case.
