The ground has fundamentally shifted. Companies across India are moving from a degree-first to a skills-first hiring approach. A recent report highlighted that a significant majority of Indian employers now prioritize practical skills and certifications
over college degrees, especially for entry-level talent. This is happening for a simple reason: AI and automation are handling many of the routine, entry-level tasks that were once the domain of fresh graduates. As a result, companies need employees who can step in and solve complex problems from day one. The India Skills Report 2026 found that only 56.35% of graduates are considered employable, not because of a lack of jobs, but because of a mismatch between their academic knowledge and the real-world needs of the industry. Outdated curriculums and a lack of hands-on experience mean many students graduate with a qualification but without job-ready capabilities.
Beyond the Syllabus: Skills That Matter Now
So, what exactly are these in-demand skills? They fall into two main categories. First are the hard, technical skills. Proficiency in programming languages like Python is foundational for many AI roles. Beyond that, employers are looking for expertise in machine learning, deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow, data analytics, cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure), and MLOps, which involves deploying and managing AI models at scale. India has a massive demand for professionals in these areas, with NASSCOM estimating a need for over 1 million AI-skilled professionals by 2027—a significant gap compared to the current talent pool. The second category is human-centric or 'soft' skills. AI can analyse data, but it can’t lead a team, negotiate a deal, or think critically with business context. Skills like adaptability, creative problem-solving, communication, and collaboration are becoming more valuable than ever because they are the things machines cannot replicate. Employers are finding that while technical skills get a candidate noticed, it is these soft skills that predict long-term success.
From Graduate to Professional: How to Bridge the Gap
The message is clear: a degree is a starting point, not the final destination. To stay competitive, continuous learning is essential. This doesn't necessarily mean another three-year degree. The focus is on upskilling (enhancing existing skills) and reskilling (learning new ones). Aspiring professionals should actively build a portfolio of real-world projects that demonstrate their abilities. This could involve participating in hackathons, contributing to open-source projects, or taking on freelance assignments. Industry-recognized certifications in high-demand areas like cloud computing or data science can also validate your expertise to employers. Furthermore, internships and apprenticeships have become critical for gaining practical experience and understanding workplace culture before graduation. Government and industry bodies are also pushing for more collaboration between academia and companies to make curriculums more relevant and to co-fund reskilling programs.
