The Journey in Detail
The Ministry of Railways has officially approved the new Vande Bharat Express connecting Surat, Gujarat's commercial powerhouse, with Udaipur, the jewel of Rajasthan. The semi-high-speed train will cover the approximately 690-kilometre distance in just
seven and a half hours, a significant improvement over the current eight to nine-hour road journey. Operated by Western Railway, the eight-coach train is scheduled to run six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. According to the planned schedule, the train will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur at 1:40 PM. For the return leg, it will leave Udaipur at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. This convenient timing allows for comfortable day travel in both directions, making short trips and weekend getaways more feasible than ever before.
Connecting Key Hubs
This is more than just a connection between two major cities; it’s a strategic corridor linking several important towns across both states. The train will make nine commercial stops between Surat and Udaipur, enhancing connectivity for a wider population. The designated halts are Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. This route effectively extends the high-speed network into southern Rajasthan and central Gujarat, regions that stand to benefit immensely from faster, more reliable transit. The new service will also see the discontinuation of the existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express, with this new, longer route effectively replacing and upgrading it.
A Major Boost for Tourism
The new Vande Bharat Express is poised to be a game-changer for tourism. Udaipur, renowned as the 'City of Lakes' and a global destination for its palaces, culture, and destination weddings, will now be much more accessible for residents of Surat and South Gujarat. Likewise, travelers from Rajasthan will have a direct, premium link to Surat, which, beyond being the 'Diamond City' and a textile hub, offers its own unique attractions, including a vibrant culinary scene and historical significance. The train is expected to spark considerable excitement among tourists and travel planners, especially with its launch anticipated before the Navratri festival season. By making the journey faster and more comfortable, the service will likely encourage more frequent leisure travel and strengthen the social and cultural ties between the two states.
Fueling Economic Growth
Beyond tourism, the Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat will provide a significant impetus to trade and business activities. Surat is a massive economic engine, and providing a high-speed connection to the growing markets and industrial areas in and around Udaipur and southern Rajasthan creates new efficiencies for businesses. The train’s schedule and stops are well-suited for business travelers who need to commute between the two states. This improved connectivity facilitates easier movement of professionals, goods, and services, fostering a stronger economic partnership. Surat will host the primary maintenance facility for the train, further cementing its role in the Vande Bharat network.
The Vande Bharat Experience
For passengers, the Vande Bharat Express offers a significant upgrade in travel comfort and technology. These trains are known for their modern amenities, including fully air-conditioned coaches with options for AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car classes. The airline-style seating, which can be rotated, ensures passengers always face the direction of travel. Onboard features typically include Wi-Fi for infotainment, large windows for scenic views, GPS-based passenger information systems, and modular bio-toilets. The emphasis on speed, safety, and service redefines the rail travel experience, making it a preferred choice for many. This new route marks Surat's first originating and terminating Vande Bharat service, a point of pride for the city.
