shortage of skilled labour. The solar revolution isn’t just about manufacturing panels; it requires a vast army of trained technicians who can safely install, maintain, and repair these systems. According to industry reports, rooftop solar projects are particularly labour-intensive, creating significantly more jobs per megawatt than large-scale solar farms. This has created an urgent need for a workforce with practical, hands-on expertise—a gap that traditional engineering courses often don't fill.
Inside the Hands-On Academy
Enter the new rooftop solar academies. These specialized training centres focus on practical, job-ready skills. A typical curriculum moves beyond theory to cover the essentials of on-site work. Students learn to handle different types of solar panels, inverters, and battery storage systems. They are trained in system design, site assessment, proper installation techniques to ensure panels are correctly oriented for maximum energy production, and critical safety protocols. Many of these programs, like the 'Suryamitra' initiative supported by the government, are designed to create a pipeline of certified solar technicians. Recently, new academies have launched, such as the India-Australia Rooftop Solar Training Academy at Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), with a specific focus on upskilling workers and increasing the participation of women in the green workforce.
The Evidence: From Training to a Paycheque
The evidence supporting these training programs lies in the explosive growth of green jobs. India's renewable energy sector is becoming a major employment ecosystem. Recent reports estimate that hundreds of thousands of jobs have been added in the clean energy sector in recent years, with rooftop solar being the largest contributor. Projections suggest that meeting India's 2030 renewable energy targets could create millions of job opportunities, with a significant number in long-term roles like operations and maintenance. For graduates of these academies, certification directly translates to employability. Companies across the country are actively hiring technicians, installers, and site engineers. While salaries vary by location and experience, a certified solar technician can earn a competitive starting salary, with significant potential for growth as they gain experience or even start their own solar businesses.
A Career with a Conscience
Working in the solar industry offers more than just a stable job; it provides a career path with a purpose. Technicians and installers are on the front lines of India's transition to clean energy. This work directly contributes to reducing carbon emissions and strengthening the country's energy security. Government initiatives like the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are further fuelling demand at the household level, creating entrepreneurial opportunities for skilled technicians in their own communities. As the technology evolves to include more sophisticated energy storage and smart grid integration, the need for continuous learning and advanced skills will create further avenues for career progression, from senior technician to project manager.

The government's continued policy support, including schemes to boost domestic manufacturing and new frontiers like floating solar projects, ensures that the demand for a skilled workforce will only increase. The Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ) is working to standardize training and certification, ensuring that the skills taught in academies align with industry needs. These hands-on training centres are therefore not just a response to a temporary skills gap; they are a fundamental part of the infrastructure needed to sustain India’s long-term clean energy ambitions, building a generation of workers who will power the nation's sustainable future.
