Your body is brilliant at managing its own temperature, aiming to keep its core at a stable 37°C. The primary tool for this is sweating. When your internal temperature rises, your brain signals millions of sweat glands to release a mixture of water and salts
onto your skin. The magic, however, isn't in the sweating itself but in its evaporation. For sweat to turn from a liquid into a vapour, it needs energy, which it pulls from your skin in the form of heat. This process of evaporation is what actually cools you down. In dry heat, this system is incredibly efficient, as the air readily absorbs the moisture from your skin.
When Evaporation Fails
Monsoon humidity throws a wrench in this finely tuned system. Humidity is the measure of water vapour already present in the air. During the monsoon, relative humidity is often extremely high, meaning the air is already saturated with moisture. Because the air can’t hold much more water, the sweat on your skin has nowhere to go. It can't evaporate effectively. This is why you feel constantly sticky and drenched; the sweat just sits there. Without evaporation, your body’s primary cooling mechanism is severely impaired. Your internal thermostat senses you're still hot and, in a desperate attempt to cool down, tells your glands to produce even more sweat. This creates a vicious cycle: you sweat profusely but get little to no cooling relief.
The Danger of Dehydration
This continuous, ineffective sweating is what leads to a rapid loss of body fluids. It’s a common misconception that you're less likely to get dehydrated during the monsoon because it feels cooler than peak summer. In reality, your body can be losing a significant amount of water. To make matters worse, the feeling of thirst may not be as strong in humid conditions, tricking you into thinking you're adequately hydrated when you're not. This silent dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and muscle cramps. Your heart also has to work harder in humid weather to pump blood to the skin to try and cool the body, placing extra strain on your cardiovascular system.
More Than Just Water Loss
When you sweat, you don't just lose water. You also lose crucial minerals called electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium. These are essential for nerve function, muscle contractions, and maintaining your body's pH balance. Losing them contributes heavily to that feeling of sluggishness and exhaustion so common during the monsoon. Simply drinking plain water might not be enough to recover if you've been sweating heavily, as it doesn't replace these lost electrolytes. In some cases, drinking excessive amounts of plain water can further dilute the sodium in your body, which can be problematic.
How to Restore Your Balance
Staying properly hydrated during the monsoon is about being proactive, not just reacting to thirst. Make it a habit to sip water throughout the day, even if you don't feel particularly thirsty. To replenish lost electrolytes, consider incorporating coconut water, fresh lime juice with a pinch of salt and sugar, or a proper oral rehydration solution (ORS) if you've been particularly active. Eating water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges can also contribute to both your fluid and mineral intake. It's also wise to limit diuretics like caffeine and alcohol, as they can accelerate fluid loss. By understanding how humidity affects your body, you can take simple steps to support your internal systems and feel your best throughout the rainy season.
