Tread Depth: The Coin Test
Tire tread is designed to channel water away from the contact patch, preventing a dangerous phenomenon called hydroplaning where the car effectively surfs on a layer of water. For monsoon driving, experts suggest a tread depth of at least 3 mm is much
safer than the legal minimum of 1.6 mm. A simple hack is the coin test. Take a two-rupee coin and insert it into the tire's central grooves. If the outer golden ring of the coin is fully visible, your tread is likely too shallow for wet ghat roads and it’s time to consider a replacement. Worn tires significantly increase braking distances and reduce steering control on wet surfaces, a risk you cannot afford on winding roads.
Tire Pressure: The Cold Check Rule
Correct tire pressure is crucial for maintaining a stable grip. Always check the pressure when the tires are cold—meaning the car has been parked for at least three hours. Driving heats up the air inside, giving you an inaccurate, inflated reading. The manufacturer's recommended pressure can be found on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb or in your owner's manual. Do not follow the maximum pressure number written on the tire's sidewall. Both underinflated and overinflated tires reduce the contact patch with the road, compromising stability and leading to uneven wear, which is especially dangerous around sharp, slippery corners.
Sidewall Scan: Look for Bulges and Cracks
The sidewall is the tire's most vulnerable area, and ghat roads littered with potholes hidden by rainwater are a major threat. Before your trip, carefully inspect the sidewalls of all four tires for any bulges, deep cuts, or visible cracks. A bulge indicates internal structural damage, meaning the tire is compromised and could fail suddenly under pressure. Cracks suggest the rubber has become old and brittle. A tire with any significant sidewall damage should be replaced immediately, not repaired, as the stress of mountain driving can cause a blowout.
Tire Age: More Than Just Tread
Even a tire with excellent tread can be a safety hazard if it's too old. Over time, the rubber compounds harden and degrade, losing the flexibility needed to grip the road effectively. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires every six years, regardless of how much they've been used. You can find your tire's manufacturing date by looking for the four-digit DOT code on the sidewall. The first two digits represent the week, and the last two represent the year. For instance, '3223' means the tire was made in the 32nd week of 2023. An old, hardened tire is a silent risk.
Alignment and Balancing: The Feel on the Road
Pay attention to how your car feels on a straight road. Does it pull to one side? Does the steering wheel vibrate at certain speeds? These are classic signs of improper wheel alignment or balancing. While these might be minor annoyances in city traffic, on a narrow, rain-slicked ghat road, they can severely impact your car's handling and lead to uneven, premature tire wear. Hitting a deep pothole, a common monsoon hazard, can easily throw your alignment off. Getting your wheels aligned and balanced every 8,000-10,000 km is a good practice for Indian road conditions.
The Spare: Your Forgotten Fifth Tire
A flat tire on a remote, dark ghat road is a situation no one wants. Your spare tire is your only way out, but it's useless if it's not ready to perform. Many drivers forget to inspect their spare. Before you leave, perform all the same checks on your spare tire as you do on the main four. Ensure it has the correct pressure, check for any visible damage or signs of aging, and confirm its tread is in good condition. Also, make sure you have the complete toolkit required to change a tire, including a jack and lug wrench that are in working order.
