Why the Rules Are Changing
For years, complimentary lounge access was a key attraction for signing up for a credit card, offered even on many entry-level cards. However, with a post-pandemic surge in travel, lounges became increasingly crowded. This created a significant cost burden
for banks, which pay operators a fee for every customer visit — reportedly around ₹800 for a single domestic entry. To manage these soaring expenses and ensure the perk remains viable for genuinely active customers, banks like HDFC, ICICI, and Axis have shifted from a simple card-holding benefit to a spend-linked reward. The message is clear: loyalty and consistent usage are now the keys to the lounge door.
The New Spend-Based Landscape
The new normal for lounge access involves meeting a minimum spending requirement in a preceding calendar quarter to gain access in the next one. The specifics vary by bank and card, but a clear trend has emerged. For instance, many ICICI Bank cardholders now need to spend ₹75,000 in a quarter to unlock lounge visits. Similarly, Axis Bank has implemented a threshold of ₹50,000 in the previous three months for most of its cards. HDFC Bank has also updated rules across its portfolio; a Regalia Gold card, for example, now requires a ₹60,000 quarterly spend. Even debit cards, which once offered this perk more freely, are moving to spend-based models, with some HDFC debit cards requiring a ₹10,000 quarterly spend for a digital voucher.
Adopting the Milestone Mindset
Rather than giving up on the perk, many young professionals are adapting by adopting a 'milestone mindset'. This isn't about reckless spending but about consolidating and planning expenses to strategically hit quarterly targets. It involves a conscious shift from spreading expenses across multiple cards to focusing spending on one or two primary cards that offer the most valuable travel benefits. This strategic approach turns everyday spending into a tool for unlocking travel luxury. It’s a gamified approach to personal finance, where hitting a spending target feels like achieving a level-up in a video game, with the reward being a quiet corner and a hot meal before a flight.
Smart Strategies to Meet Your Targets
Hitting a target of ₹50,000 or ₹75,000 in three months may seem daunting, but savvy users are employing several clever tactics. One popular method is consolidating all monthly payments onto a single card. This includes everything from rent payments and utility bills to streaming subscriptions and grocery shopping. Another key strategy is timing big-ticket purchases. Planning to buy a new phone, laptop, or home appliance? Aligning the purchase with your card's billing cycle can help you meet the quarterly milestone in one go. Group expenses, like a dinner with friends or booking tickets for a family trip, can also be channelled through one card, with others paying back their share via UPI. This concentrates the spending, helping the cardholder reach their goal faster without personally overspending.
Is Chasing Milestones Always Worth It?
While these strategies can be effective, it's crucial to evaluate if the chase is worthwhile for your specific situation. For frequent flyers who travel several times a quarter, the effort to meet spending milestones can easily pay for itself, considering walk-in lounge access can cost anywhere from ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 per visit. However, for someone who flies only once or twice a year, forcing expenses onto a credit card and potentially risking debt may not be a financially sound decision. In such cases, using a lifetime-free card with simpler benefits or simply paying for lounge access on the rare occasion you need it might be a more prudent choice. The key is to align your credit card strategy with your actual travel frequency and overall financial health.
