Jebel Shams: The Grand Canyon of Arabia
Often called the 'Grand Canyon of Arabia', Jebel Shams is Oman’s highest peak and a paradise for hikers and sightseers. The main attraction is the spectacular Wadi Ghul, a canyon with vertical drops of nearly a kilometre. You can drive to the top for stunning
views or take the famous Balcony Walk, a relatively flat trail that offers unforgettable vistas into the chasm. Unlike its American counterpart, the experience is largely free. For accommodation, budget-conscious travellers can find affordable guesthouses and even designated wild camping spots, making it an accessible adventure. The drive itself, through the rugged Al Hajar mountain range, is an experience worth savouring.
Wahiba Sands: An Authentic Desert Experience
No trip to Oman is complete without venturing into the rolling dunes of Wahiba Sands (also known as Sharqiya Sands). This is where you can experience the quintessential desert adventure: thrilling 4x4 dune bashing, camel rides at sunset, and sandboarding down golden slopes. What makes it great for budget travellers is the variety of accommodation. While luxury camps exist, there are numerous budget-friendly desert camps that offer a traditional Bedouin experience, often including dinner and breakfast. These camps provide a fantastic opportunity to sleep under a blanket of stars, far from city lights, and immerse yourself in local culture.
Wadis: Hidden Oases of Turquoise Water
Oman's landscape is dotted with wadis, which are natural valleys or riverbeds that often hold stunning turquoise water pools, perfect for a refreshing swim. Two of the most popular are Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid. Wadi Shab requires a short hike, rewarding you with a series of emerald pools leading to a hidden waterfall inside a cave. Wadi Bani Khalid is more easily accessible, offering large, serene pools surrounded by palm trees. Visiting these natural wonders is often free or costs very little, providing a perfect, low-cost activity to cool off from the desert heat.
Making it Happen on a Budget
Oman is surprisingly accessible for Indian travellers. Direct flights from major Indian cities like Mumbai and Delhi take just three to four hours. Indian citizens can apply for an e-visa online, and the process is generally straightforward with requirements like a valid passport, flight bookings, and proof of accommodation. To keep costs down, travel during the shoulder seasons (May or September) to find cheaper flights and hotels. In cities, opt for local eateries and coffee shops over expensive hotel restaurants to enjoy authentic and affordable Omani food. Renting a car is often the most cost-effective way to explore, especially if you're travelling in a group, but public buses between major cities are also available.
