The Wake-Up Call Your Brain Needs
When the photons from morning sunlight enter your eyes, they send a direct and powerful message to your SCN. This light, particularly the blue-spectrum light which is abundant in the morning, signals that the day has officially begun. This light-based signal triggers a crucial hormonal cascade designed to rapidly increase alertness. Firstly, it tells the pineal gland to immediately stop producing melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. If melatonin levels remain high after you wake up, you'll continue to feel groggy and lethargic. Simultaneously, that morning light signal prompts a healthy spike in cortisol. Beyond cortisol, sunlight also stimulates the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of well-being, calmness, and focus. Furthermore, some studies indicate that sunlight exposure can increase the availability of dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with motivation and drive. How to Make Morning Light Work for You
Harnessing this natural benefit is remarkably simple. The goal is to get direct, natural sunlight into your eyes within the first 30 to 60 minutes of waking. Aim for 10 to 30 minutes of exposure. On bright, sunny days, 10 minutes might be enough, while on overcast days, you may need closer to 30 minutes, as cloud cover significantly reduces the intensity of the light. For this to be effective, you need to be outside. Window glass filters out some of the crucial light wavelengths your brain needs. You should also avoid wearing sunglasses during this time, though regular eyeglasses or contact lenses are fine. Never look directly at the sun; simply being outside with your eyes open is all that's required. You can combine this habit with another activity, like a short walk, enjoying your morning tea on the balcony, or simply standing outside while you plan your day.
