What Exactly is ChatGPT Sites?
ChatGPT Sites is a new feature from OpenAI that allows users to generate, host, and publish a website directly from a conversation with ChatGPT. Launched in public beta on July 9, 2026, it is integrated into ChatGPT Work, the company's productivity-focused
agent. The process is straightforward: a user describes the site they want, including its function and content, and ChatGPT builds a private preview. From there, the user can request changes to the layout, text, or interactive elements through chat before publishing it to a shareable URL. This tool represents a significant step beyond simply generating code snippets; it handles the entire workflow from creation to hosting.
From a Simple Prompt to a Live Portal
The user journey with ChatGPT Sites is designed to be conversational and iterative. It starts with a prompt in ChatGPT Work, where you might ask it to “build a website for a project launch tracker” or simply use the `@Sites` command. You can attach files, data, or other constraints to guide the AI. ChatGPT then generates an initial version of the site, which is only visible to you. You can then refine it with follow-up prompts like, “change the color scheme to blue and grey,” or “add a form to collect user feedback.” Once you’re satisfied, you can choose the access level—from private to fully public—and publish the site. This conversational workflow makes web creation more accessible to those without technical expertise.
Beyond Static Pages: What 'Interactive' Means
The term “interactive portals” suggests more than just simple, static webpages. OpenAI’s documentation and early examples confirm this, positioning Sites as a tool for creating lightweight web apps and internal tools. Examples include project dashboards, launch calendars, calculators for exploring options, and onboarding pages for new team members. The system supports database integration, access controls, and storage, which are essential for creating dynamic experiences where users can interact with information rather than just read it. However, the primary focus seems to be on internal business tools and prototypes, rather than public-facing e-commerce sites or large-scale consumer applications.
A New Player in the No-Code Arena
ChatGPT Sites enters a crowded market of no-code and AI-powered website builders like Wix, Squarespace, and Hostinger. While those platforms offer visual drag-and-drop editors, ChatGPT Sites differentiates itself with its prompt-first, conversational interface. Instead of manually arranging pre-designed blocks, users co-create the site with the AI. This approach has the potential to dramatically speed up the initial creation process. Existing tools often provide more granular visual control and are better optimized for public-facing business sites with features like e-commerce and advanced SEO. ChatGPT Sites, in its current form, is aimed more at the rapid development of functional internal tools and dashboards.
Current Limitations and Who Can Use It
As a public beta, ChatGPT Sites comes with some important limitations. Availability is currently restricted to paid ChatGPT plans (excluding Free and Go tiers) and is not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the UK at launch. Workspace administrators in business settings can also control who has the ability to create and publish sites. While the tool is powerful for creating internal portals and dashboards, it is not intended to replace complex software development. Users should be mindful that they are building on a platform managed by OpenAI, which means they are subject to its usage limits and terms of service, and do not have the same control as with self-hosted solutions.
