A Major Boost in Summer Services
Indian Railways has significantly ramped up its services for the summer season, which extends until July 15, 2026. A massive deployment of 908 special trains making over 18,200 trips has been planned to accommodate the holiday and student travel rush.
Central Railway is at the forefront of this effort, having approved the highest number of trips among all zones. This large-scale operation is designed to increase the availability of confirmed seats and improve connectivity between major hubs like Mumbai and Pune and destinations across the country. The move comes as a welcome relief for students travelling for vacation, heading back to college, or appearing for examinations.
Key Special Trains from Mumbai and Pune
Central Railway has launched a series of special trains from major hubs like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Dadar, and Pune to clear the July congestion. Many of these services run daily or on multiple days a week, connecting Maharashtra with key destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, and other states. For example, daily specials like the Pune-Danapur service (01449) will continue to run until mid-July. Other important services include tri-weekly trains from Dadar to Ballia (01025) and multi-day services from CSMT and LTT to destinations like Gorakhpur, Banaras, and Madgaon (Goa), which are popular among student travellers. Bookings for these trains are available at all computerised reservation counters and on the IRCTC website.
Extra Coaches for More Berths
Beyond just running new special trains, various railway zones, including Central Railway and its counterparts, are temporarily adding extra coaches to existing high-demand trains. This strategy directly increases the number of available seats and berths on popular routes without altering the timetable. These augmentations typically involve adding Sleeper Class, 3AC, or even 2AC coaches to trains seeing a consistent waitlist. While announcements for coach augmentations can be specific to certain train numbers and for limited periods, it's a common tactic used by the railways to manage seasonal demand. This provides a crucial buffer and increases the chances of confirmation for last-minute student travel plans.
Understanding Student Concessions
While special trains and extra coaches are available to all passengers, bonafide students of recognised institutions can also avail specific railway concessions for certain types of travel. This long-standing facility offers a percentage-based discount on the base fare for journeys between a student's hometown and their educational institution, for educational tours, or for travelling to appear for examinations. The concession percentage varies, with up to 50% in Second and Sleeper (SL) class for general category students and 75% for SC/ST students. It's important to note that these concessions are not for general holiday travel and must be availed by submitting a specific form, certified by the educational institution, at a physical railway booking counter, not online. Students must also carry their valid student ID card while travelling.
How to Plan Your July Travel
With the rush at its peak, planning is crucial. Students and their families are advised to book their tickets well in advance, as demand for these special services is expected to be very high. The booking window for most trains opens 60 days in advance. Passengers should regularly check the IRCTC website (www.irctc.co.in) and the official social media handles of Central Railway and other zonal railways for the latest announcements on new special trains or the addition of extra coaches. For availing student concessions, the process must be initiated well in time by obtaining the necessary concession form from the college or school and presenting it at the reservation office.
