Indian Railways' new Vande Bharat sleeper trains are set to redefine overnight journeys. Beyond high speeds, a small but significant design detail near the entrance promises a big improvement in passenger comfort, solving a long-standing issue.
What is the New 'Buffer Zone'?
Anyone
who has travelled on a long-distance train in India knows the challenge of getting a berth near the coach doors. The constant foot traffic, noise from the vestibule, and light spilling in can make for a restless night. The designers of the Vande Bharat sleeper have addressed this head-on. The new layout includes a dedicated buffer area between the main entrance door and the first set of passenger berths. This zone, separated by an additional sliding door, effectively creates a noise and light barrier, shielding passengers in nearby berths from the disturbances common at the coach's entrance.
Solving a Common Passenger Gripe
In conventional AC 3-tier coaches, including those on premium trains like the Rajdhani Express, the berths located next to the main doors are often considered the least desirable. Passengers in these seats are exposed to frequent movement as people board, alight, or move between coaches. The noise of the doors opening and closing, coupled with conversations in the entryway, often disrupts sleep. By physically separating the sleeping area from the high-traffic entrance zone, the Vande Bharat sleeper's design directly tackles this widespread complaint, aiming to provide a quieter and more peaceful environment for all passengers, especially those at the ends of the coach.
A Suite of Comfort-Focused Upgrades
The entrance buffer is just one of many passenger-centric improvements. The berths themselves are designed to be wider and have better cushioning than their predecessors. Each berth is equipped with individual reading lights and USB charging ports. For added comfort and quiet, the coaches feature improved soundproofing to reduce track noise and jerk-free couplers to ensure a smoother ride. The interiors use a soothing colour palette of cream, yellow, and wood finishes to create a pleasant ambiance. Sensor-based lighting in common areas and subtle floor lighting for nighttime movement further enhance the experience.
Beyond Comfort: Safety and Accessibility
The focus on passenger experience extends to safety and accessibility. The trains are equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV cameras in all coaches, and advanced fire safety measures, including fire detection systems and remotely operated fire barrier doors. Toilets are ergonomically designed and feature odour-control and bio-vacuum systems. For the first time, a shower with hot water will be available for First AC passengers. The train is also disabled-friendly, with specially designed berths and toilets to accommodate passengers with different needs.
The Next Generation of Overnight Travel
The Vande Bharat sleeper is a self-propelled trainset, which allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, cutting down journey times compared to locomotive-hauled trains like the Rajdhani. Prototypes were rolled out by BEML, with the first commercial services beginning in early 2026. As of late 2026, services have been launched on key routes like Delhi–Varanasi and Mumbai–Bengaluru, with plans for a wider rollout. Each 16–coach train can accommodate around 823 passengers across First AC, 2–Tier AC, and 3–Tier AC classes. With these thoughtful upgrades, Indian Railways aims to set a new standard for long–distance train travel in the country.
